Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesThis game was HUGE back in 1989, and even after the sequels came out, the game was still awesome, even today, and it puts up a great challenge. Although it isn't the best TMNT game (that would be TMNT 3:The Manhattan Project), it still remains as one of the classic NES titles, even if there were times where it was frustrating.

Product Description:
The game begins with all four Ninja Turtles: Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael, who can be switched between at any time during gameplay. Each turtle is practically identical besides the attack range and speed of their weapon. The player must travel through the first 5 of the levels using an overview map to enter various sewers, warehouses, and other areas which leads to the goal of each level. Along the way the player fights various enemies that range from Foot Soldiers and Rat Kings to bomb dropping blimps and chainsaw wielding baddies. Each turtle serves as a life and there are only 2 continues. Later in the game, the player is given several opportunities to rescue some of the turtles.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles released by Konami in 1989 for NES.this another great classic Beat-'Em-Up for Konami.

Dragon Warrior (Nintendo NES) Review

Dragon WarriorDragon Warrior is a game of complete skill and strategy because the player has to figure out how to get to a town without dying and gaining experience at the same time. The object of the game is to defeat the dragonlord, no more to be said except that it is hard to get a high enough level to beat any minion of the dragonlord and himself.

The controls are the easiest to tell and learn, the controls are the following:
A button is the basic action it does everything, the player press A to bring up a menu of commands. In a fight it comes up automaticly.
B button cancels a command.
Start pauses the game.
Use the control pad to move the character.
Select does nothing.

This is a really fun game and I would recommend this game to people who still have a NES(Nintendo Entertianment System).

NES/SNES/Genesis FC3 Plus Gaming System Review

NES/SNES/Genesis FC3 Plus Gaming SystemI feel a need to share my experiences regarding this system in hopes of preventing someone out there a lot of anguish. I own a video game store and started out selling these consoles. Yobo has a great idea here, and when the unit works, it is generally pretty faithful to the original. Unfortunately, the word "quality" is not in their vocabulary. I'll give you some statistics from my own experiences in selling these. I started out with 10 consoles. Three didn't work straight out of the box. Each console comes with two controllers, times 10 systems = 20 total controllers. Of these 20, 5 didn't work out of the box, another 12 broke within the first week or two of use. The 'D' pad controller is what breaks on them. Four out of twenty total light guns didn't work out of the box. The unit comes with no paper work or warranty information of ANY kind. We, however, had a warranty through our distributor so we were able to get replacements on the defective parts. However, out of all the replacements I got back, about 50% did not work or broke within the first week or so. My distributor even told me a story that one unit blew up and burst in to flames when it was plugged in! I am not alone in my experiences with this unit. Our distributor told us that it is an ongoing problem that most people have with Yobo. We have since discontinued selling this product, but are still having to replace parts for customers. If you are looking for a system that will play NES & SNES games, try the Retro-Duo system. So far, from my experience, it seems to be much better quality and it will also accept the original SNES controllers. Additionally, I have never been able to get a response from Yobo regarding any of these issues, so you will unlikely have any sort of recourse from them. I hope this information saves someone out there from all the grief that I have endured from this company.
Good Luck

Nintendo Entertainment System Control Deck, Top Loading Review

Nintendo Entertainment System Control Deck, Top LoadingPlaying classic video games on their original system is like playing an old vinyl record. Sure you could listen to it on an CD or MP3 player...but it just doesn't have that same feeling of nostalgia. That is how I feel about video games. There are all kinds of roms out there, and the Nintendo Virtual Console is a great way to play the classic Nintendo games of yore, but you can't beat the original games on the original system. This would be great if the original Nintendo wasn't prone to break down so easily.

The original Nintendo "toaster" model represented the late 80's and early 90's through it's VCR like qualities. Much like a VHS tape, these cartridges got put into a slot and pushed down into the system to play for hours on end. However constant use would cause the Nintendo to malfunction unlike any other console I have encountered. The constant blinking of the red light...or the graphics falling apart in the middle of the game so that Mario no longer looks like Mario, but rather a pixaleted amoeba. The Nintendo top loader is a great alternative to extend the life of you classic Nintendo games, all while still getting the feel of the original.

The Nintendo Top Loader (or NES 2) was released towards the end of the 8 bit era. It was smaller, sleeker, and had a much better top loading design. However, due to everyone evolving to a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis the Top Loader never got a true chance to shine. Not only that, but it used the old RF plug ins, and some cartridges had annoying vertical lines that could be seen every now and then in the background of a video game. Not only that but it didn't support the original Game Genie. Also since Nintendo games were never meant to be loaded from the top, if the system was bumped or barely moved, the game would freeze. These technical flaws made it somewhat of a failure..in fact I never knew it existed until almost 15 years later!! Now it is a rare collector's item to find, and is the best way to cling onto the games of yore.

Going on the information I shared above, I finally broke down and ordered one. My original Nintendo was a severe pain with constant blowing, ejecting, resetting, blowing, resetting..etc. I had a mountain of old games and nothing to play them on. When the Top Loader arrived I was amazed with how small it was. It hardly takes up any space. I dare say its about the same size of the Game Cube..maybe smaller. After admiring the new design, I popped a game in and it started up without me having to blow into the cartridge. I was amazed. This doesn't work for every game, because dust still gets in them causing a blank white screen to appear instead of the flashing screen that the old Nintendo annoyed us with. Cartridges now require one or two blows and that is it. It is a helluva lot more convienent than the original Nintendo model. People have complained about the vertical lines that occasionally appear in the background, but I don't notice them at all. Sometimes if i look hard enough for them, but even if I do see them it never distracts me from actually playing the game. I always make it a point to never bump my consoles or move them during play. It just seems to make common sense, ecspecially with an older console so that hasn't been a problem for me either. The last thing I will mention is the dog bone controller. The original Nintendo controller is the perfect controller to me. There has never been anything like it, and it will always fit nicely into any gamer's hands. The dog bone design is the offspring of a nintendo controller and a Super Nintendo controller. My girlfriend actually likes it better than the original. I prefer the old controller but I can't deny that the dog bone is pretty nice fit.

So overall, this is still an original Nintendo system, just with a top loading design. Not only is it better looking and more practical, but it extends the life on your classic Nintendo games and it's a collector's item to boot. So if you like the classics and like to play them the way they were meant to be played, then the Top Loader is top notch for you!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Review

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the PastThis is perhaps the greast game in the entire line of games in the Legend of Zelda franchise. It may not be up to the graphical standards of its sequels Ocarnia of Time and Majora's Mask, but it stands the test of time. This was the first Zelda game and RPG I had ever had the pleasure of playing.Quite honestly, this is a classic. It's a rousing adventure that once you think is completed has actually just begun.Unlike the Zelda games that came after, A Link to the Past is challenging enough to keep you on your toes without forcing you to rely on a cheat book.I completed the game and missed only one item (it was hidden extremely well). If you have never played a Zelda game before and you're wondering what the big deal is, I suggest you find a copy of this game and get ready for an adventure that rivals Final Fantasy VI.

Dr. Mario Review

Dr. MarioThis is an excellent game and if you were looking for a version of Tetris that was more challenging, than DR MARIO was for you. This game is sometimes very tricky, but it's very fun as well.
The object of the game is to match the colors of the pills that are being dropped onto the viruses below and by doing this killing them off, one by one. I really don't carw what anyone says but this game rocked. In Tetris, the challenge was to clear lines that are at the bottom and they build up. In DR MARIO you had to play the boards as they were giben and in most cases, the viruses were all over the place so placing some of the pills in the wrong place could come back to haunt you.
Like I said, the challenge to this game is great and it never got tired. Really check out DR MARIO it's worth it!

SNES/NES FC Twin Video Game System Review

SNES/NES FC Twin Video Game SystemThe FC Twin is even more than what it promises. Yes, it's a system that plays old Nintendo and Super Nintendo cartridges (PERFECTLY!), and the controllers are exact replicas of the SNES controllers, but this system is an improvement over both old systems, too.

For starters, the FC Twin is far more compact than either system. It's only slightly wider than an SNES cartridge and about 2/3rds as deep as an SNES. it will easily fit on an already crowded shelf next to your DVD player and other entertainment systems.

Secondly, the system connects to your television with modern RCA cables instead of the old coaxle connector. This means you can put the sound through your stereo system and also be confident that this will connect to any modern television set (including flat panel screens).

Finally, the NES component is a top loading cartridge system utilizing a card slot reader, so it plays classic Nintendo cartridges with far fewer problems than the original system. This means less time spent blowing on your old cartridges, hoping they'll work this time around.

The FC Twin has been ideal for my needs in terms of cost efficiency (cheaper than buying either original system), space efficiency (smaller than either system), and reliability (more reliable than an NES), but there are some minor imperfections that buyers should be warned about:

1. The FC Twin uses SNES controller sockets, which means that any SNES controller device can be used with the FC Twin, but classic NES controller devices (like the Zapper) cannot.

2. According to Wikipedia, the following Nintendo games will not work with this system: Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, Dragon Warrior II, L'Empereur, and Rad Racer II.

3. Also according to Wikipedia, the following SNES games will not work with this system: BatterUP, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Star Ocean, and Kirby Super Star. In the two years since I purchased this system, I've only discovered one other game that does not seem to work with the FC Twin: Rocco's Modern Life.

The flip side of this is that the rest of the games DO work. So, unless you're particularly attached to the above games, this is the system for you.

Finally, some people have complained about the Twin no longer reading their cartridges after only a short amount of time. People, CLEAN your cartridges before using them on a new system. In each example, applying a q-tip of rubbing alcohol to the dirty cartridge contacts and the system contacts has solved the problem for these people. You can then use the cartridge instantly since the alcohol will almost immediately dry upon contact.Make sure not to touch any other part of the interior of the twin with alcohol, though, as this can damage your system. As I've said, I've been using my FC Twin for two years now, and I've never had a single problem.

The FC Twin can play both NES and SNES cartridges. The top-loading design corrects many of the issues experienced with the original consoles, including the 'blinking red light'. The A/V output, while not as perfect as the original NES model 001, provides great picture and sound quality.

Super Nintendo NES System - Mini Redesign Review

Super Nintendo NES System - Mini RedesignThe redesign was released in North America in 1997, and was quickly cloned by pirate companies. According to the images on this item listing, they're all fakes. Buyer beware: you'd be lucky to get the real deal, but the clone consoles are rather rare too. As far as compatibility goes, some fakes use a different region coding, but don't employ the physical region locking changes, so games may run at different speeds and those with cartridge based region locks may not work. The heat sync is also missing, making the console susceptable to overheating, and the connector for the cartidges is easily breakable, since the support screws aren't printed long enough.

If you buy one of these, be sure to ask the seller beforehand some specific questions. The fake ones are too soft-edged, while everything printed by Nintendo has a sharp edge, for shadowing effects. The best example is the part of the casing that says "super nintendo entertainment system". It should be sharp-edged, raised, and in no place should it have a soft spot. The power and reset buttons on the real one are a light purple, whereas the fakes use a dark purple, such as the image in the item description here. Another easy tell are the Nintendo labels. The one with the repair phone number on the fake will have a picture of Mario that doesn't look nearly as detailed as those on legitimate Nintendo consoles. It may also have discoloration. The last clue on the exterior is the label on the bottom of the console. Nintendo's are printed in a special font, and the power ratings are in bold. The fakes use normal Times Roman, and do not have bold print on the power ratings.

Be careful when you buy one, and be sure to ask before you buy. The seller may not even know. I only rated this two stars because none of the images on the listing show official consoles.

Legend of Zelda Review

Legend of ZeldaThe Legend Of Zelda is an important milestone in video game history. It was the first of it's kind--it combined action/adventure with puzzles and some role-playing elements.Even nowadays, there STILL aren't too manygames like this.I recently purchased this game and I must say that unlike many old video games who have lost their luster over the years, the Legend Of Zelda is still just as fun to me as it was when I was a kid. What else is there to say about this classic game?If you own an original NES, you MUST have this one!
A word of warning:If you're buying a used copy, I suggest getting a gray-colored one instead of a gold one.Yes, the gold ones look cooler and are the classic issue of the game, but they're so old that the internal memory (which stores your quest data) may be worn out.Get a gray copy just to be on the safe side.

Retro Duo Twin Video Game System NES & SNES Review

Retro Duo Twin Video Game System NES & SNESIT works! The controllers are nice, although they aren't quite as heavy as the true SNES counterparts.

The Retro Duo Twin system itself is heavy and has excellent venting for heat control. It has played all my old games so far, including contra, super mario kart, mortal kombat, etc.

My major complaints are that the NES game cartridges are hard to eject (you have to really tug to get them free) and that some games seem like the colors and sounds are not 100% emulated (Super Mario Bros 3 for example.) This is mostly an issue with the NES part of the system, the SNES side of the Retro Duo Twin so far works flawlessly.

Super Mario World Review

Super Mario WorldI still play this game to this day. I played it as a kid, never beat it, but I played it so much with my friends and alone, and I pull it out to play every once in a while still. Mario has always been one of my favorite game series of all time. Opening up with arguably the most influencial game of all time: The Original Mario Brothers, then an average game by Mario standards of 2, Lost Levels only released in Japan, which is a great one by the way, and one of the most popular games of all time: Super Mario Brothers 3. World had a huge reputation to live up to, and it did, even exceeding expectations for a lot of people, including me.
Gameplay: 9.5/10
The levels in this game are brilliantly done by Nintendo. Fun platforming, cool enemies, and just above all else, amazing level design. Those of you that have played a Mario game know what I'm talking about. It's the heart and soul of every Mario game; the reason every Mario game is praised so highly. Every level is done very nicely. As usual with Nintendo, brilliant stuff here.
Back when the Super Nintendo was king, Videogames were marketed more towards people ages 15 and under, so with this, the challenge of the game isn't hard. For the most part, you can just fly through these levels but there's the occasional tricky one. One thing Nintendo should do is add a difficulty setting to their games. It pains me to play such great games, but be challenged so little with them all.
At the time of this games release, games were anywhere from 5-10 hours in length, with the RPGs going 25+ hours. You can get through this one in easily under 10 hours, and possible in 5 hours on your first time. With each time you play throug it, it becomes quicker.
I would complain about the length, but for the time it came out, it was your average length. Plus the replay value is good. The levels, as I said, are brilliant, so you want to play through them more than once, and Mario=Fun, so you will want to play through this game atleast a couple times. All in all, the length disappoints for the time it is now(2003), but it's still good, and was normal for it's time.
I took off the .5 because the difficulty setting is too easy for a lot of people. These are Nintendo games, so people don't complain because they're amazing, but you have to admit, a more challenging Mario game would be a lot of fun.
Replay Value: 8.7
I touched on this already. Nintendo games are amazing, so you'll want to play through this one atleast twice. Can't complain in this department, but extras would have helped.
Music: 9.4
Nice stuff here. Easily one of Nintendo's best soundtracks. Cheery tunes in the normal levels, darker tunes for the castles, and Ghost levels. Very nice intro for the game as well. Just great stuff through out the whole game; not a bad song anywhere.
Graphics: 9.8/10
WOW. This is the Super Nintendo at it's best. Mario looks great, and the levels are bursting with color. The castles with lava look especially great. Vibrant, beautiful colors. Still very pleasing on the eyes to this day.
Overall:(Not an average) 9.6/10
Considered by many the best Mario game of all time, and rightfully so. From brilliant levels to great music and graphics. Nintendo went all out on this one.

NES (Nintendo) Console / FC (Famicom) - Top Loading Video Game System Console (USA Version) Review

NES Console / FC - Top Loading Video Game System ConsoleI just received mine in the mail today. It plays the games very well, and the controllers are alot more comfortable than the original nintendo ones.I got it for the younger kids so that they could play the games without worrying if the system would work or if they had to blow on the games. That was accomplished.

Problems with the system, are: as it IS compatible with the light gun, the original controllers are NOT compatible. Also not compatible is the Game Genie which leads me to beleive the software is an emulator?

I would like to know if this system reads Famicom 8 bit games, but cant seem to find any information on that at all.

Super Nintendo NES System - Video Game Console Review

Super Nintendo NES System - Video Game ConsoleAfter Sega unleashed the 16-bit Genesis, Nintendo was at a crossroads because their classic 8-bit Nintendo system was dying out.So Nintendo makes their own 16-bit system, but used a much better graphics and sound chip than the Genesis had, and remained the top system until Sony's Playstation came out in 1996.What made the Super NES kick so much was its outstanding library of games. The first party titles were out of this world, not to mention the system also had some of the best RPG's to date on any system. All in all, if you can find a Super NES anywhere, I highly recommend buying one, its a piece of video game history, and Nintendo has not been able to make a better system yet.Below is a list of games that are also recommended to get along with the system for the best playing experience:
Super Metroid
Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island
Super Mario Kart
Final Fantasy 3
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Contra 3
Super Mario All-Stars
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Tetris Attack
Donkey Kong Country
Earthbound
Chronotrigger
Super Mario RPG

Super Mario Bros. 2 Review

Super Mario Bros. 2While many consider this the black sheep of the Super Mario Bros series on the NES, this game is actually my favorite on the bunch. The world is nothing like the world of the other Mario games, and the enemies and bosses and goal is different. This is a quest to defeat Boss Wart (instead of Bowser) and you have the options of playing as one of four characters (with the ability to switch every level): Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad. Each of these characters have different play characteristics.Toad can pick up any object with no difficulty but is the worst jumper.Princess is the opposite (no strength, but can float).Luigi has the best jump (no float), but that becomes its own problem.Mario is perfectly average. These strengths and weaknesses come into play in choosing who to use for each level and some are clearly better than others on any given level. Even though I found this game to be the easiest of the bunch, for me it was also the most fun. This is still a side-scrolling game, but some levels scroll up and down on the screen (keeping the side-scrolling viewpoint, though) depending on if you are climbing or dropping down. There are shortcuts in many levels and different ways to warp, get extra lives (including an odd cheat for extra lives), or to shorten the game.In the end, there are a couple of difficult levels, but this may be the easiest of the three on the NES.Even so, this is my favorite of all of the Super Mario games on the NES.

GREAT GAME. SUPER MARIO BROTHERS PART 2 FOR NES NINTENDO. ALL-TIME CLASSIC. A MUST FOR ANY TRUE HARDCORE GAMER, COLLECTOR OR GAME PLAYER. LOTS OF FUN. HERE IS SOME MINOR INFO ON THE GAME. Players choose from four characters each time they start or restart a level: Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach. Each has a special ability: Luigi can jump very high, the Princess can remain temporarily suspended in the air as if she were levitating, Toad can pick up things quickly and is very agile, and Mario is well-balanced in all areas. This is the only original Super Mario game where Princess Peach is not the damsel-in-distress along with being the first playable female character in a Mario game. In future Mario games in which multiple characters were playable, with the exception of Mario Golf, Mario would always be the most balanced character. A unique ability in this game is the "power squat"; by holding Down on the control pad for a few seconds, players could build power for higher jumps. One of the game's most defining aspect is the ability to pluck vegetables from the ground to throw at enemies; these vegetables reappear in Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of Peach's special attacks.

Product Description:
Following a series of arcade game successes in the early 1980s, Nintendo made plans to produce a cartridge-based console. Masayuki Uemura designed the system, which was released in Japan on July 15, 1983 for ¥14,800 alongside three ports of Nintendo's successful arcade games Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Popeye. Following a product recall and a reissue with a new motherboard, the Famicom's popularity soared, becoming the best-selling game console in Japan by the end of 1984.Encouraged by its successes, Nintendo soon turned its attention to the North American market. Nintendo entered into negotiations with Atari to release the Famicom under Atari's name as the name Nintendo Enhanced Video System; however, this deal eventually fell through.[11][12] Subsequent plans to market a Famicom console in North America featuring a keyboard, cassette data recorder, wireless joystick controller, and a special BASIC cartridge under the name "Nintendo Advanced Video System" likewise never materialized. In June 1985, Nintendo unveiled its American version of the Famicom at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It rolled out its first systems to limited American markets on October 18, 1985, following up with a full-fledged North American release of the console in February of the following year.[13] Nintendo simultaneously released eighteen launch titles: 10-Yard Fight, Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Golf, Gyromite, Hogan's Alley, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Mach Rider, Pinball, Stack-Up, Tennis, Wild Gunman, Wrecking Crew, and, Super Mario Bros..- Wikipedia

NES Retro Entertainment System Review

NES Retro Entertainment SystemThe Retro Entertainment System, or RES, does a decent job of playing NES games. The only real setback isthe cleanliness of the cartridges themselves. Be sure to clean your old games THOROUGHLY with a Q-Tip before using them with the RES. If you insert games with grime and dust on the contacts, it can enter the RES itself and cause problems for other games. (see below)

The main goal of the RES itself is to play your old NES games presumably BETTER than on the original system.
This is true for several reasons:
-The system is brand new with no wear and tear from years of use.
-It loads all games from the top, not the front, eliminating the problem of the game not making contact to the system properly.
-The video-out problem with scan lines appearing on the old system are not present on the RES.
-The system itself is much smaller than the original NES and considerably lighter. It's roughly 5" x 1.5" x 5" at around 0.5 LBS (An NES cartridge is slightly longer than the actual system).

The first game I tried (Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt) worked immediately with no problem. However, when I started trying some dustier games, they required some additional cleaning before working.

Like said before, if your games are too dirty, they can dirty up the RES as well. The same Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt cartridge I used at first stopped working later on after playing numerous other titles, and required some fidgeting.

But don't be alarmed with games just not starting up, some deep cleaning of the cartridge contacts (even with heavy chemicals, going against Nintendo's wishes, if it is giving serious problems) may be necessary.
Always remember, the original NES had it way worse and it was both the console and the cartridge at fault. Here, its probably just your cartridges. If a cartridge, when started, shows a white screen, scrambled text or anything other than the game, try holding the reset button down for a second, then releasing, this usually does the trick. If not, try removing and re-inserting the cartridge or wiggling it back and forth. If this doesn't work, clean your cartridge again.

When a game does work, the system plays it 100% perfectly. Please remember, my games are excessively dirty and have probably caused me more problems than any other user.

The system is designed to grip your games tightly to maintain even connections with the cartridge. Although it does this well, it may cause the cartridge to be difficult to remove when finished playing. All you can do is, as carefully as possible, remove the game upwards with even force. Unfortunately, the RES doesn't hold your games in horizontally (from front to back) tightly. The game can wiggle back and forth freely and if moved, the game will freeze. Be sure not to touch the game once its up and working.

A very substantial downside to the system is that it seems to be manufactured very cheaply. The plastic feels very light. The system and it's controllersjust seem very fragile. Great care must be taken when setting up and using the system.

Aside from that, one of the main reasons I got this particular model was because it has the original NES controller ports. Other 3rd party systems such as these used only the SNES controller ports. This is important if you want to use the classic NES controller or the Zapper.

All-in-all, this is a purchase I don't regret. I realize that i could have spent way more for an original NES and had way more problems. I even have more games on the way now that I know everything works fine.

This is definitely a good buy. If you have a bunch of old games and an NES that just isn't playing them, this is the item for you.

Super Mario Bros. 3 Review

Super Mario Bros. 3Super Mario Bros 2 is my favorite game of the series and the original SMB is a legend. So where does this leave Super Mario Bros 3?This was the last Super Mario game on the old NES and while I might like some of the other games more, this might be the class of the series on the NES.With the strange direction that SMB2 went, this was a trip back to the roots of Mario. This is a true side scrolling game and features many of the same enemies from the original. You still jump, stomp and throw fire to make your way through the game. But there are new features now.First, there is now a world map and you can select which level you want to enter next. Some levels are avoidable, some are not, but you can also do special areas (several mini-games and an area where you get bonus items). You are able to get items throughout the game, and you can use them before levels to be stronger. There are also several different suits that augment your abilities. The most common is the Racoon suit which allows you to kill the enemies by flicking your tail at them, and also giving you the ability to fly for short periods of time. There is also a frog suit (allowing swimming to be easier), a Tanooki suit (much like the raccoon suit, but you can briefly turn to stone to avoid enemies...rare), and I believe there is a Hammer Brothers Suit (but I could be wrong about this one....my memory is a little hazy). This is one of the best games released for the NES and is essential gaming for a Mario fan.

Generation NEX Videogame Console Review

Generation NEX Videogame ConsoleFirst lets get one thing out of the way, if you are the type of person that is a "Diehard Nintendo Purist" and need everything perfect when it comes to playing all your favorite NES games, then you need to have, and stay with, an Official Original NES system.

The Generation NEX is built around the Nintendo-on-a-chip technology or NOAC as it is commonly called. This is an attempt to fabricate the original NES hardware on a single computer chip. The technology is not perfect in that it does not fully imitate the hardware perfectly. But the method is cheap to make and mass produce. Some, or many, manufacturers have taken advantage of that. Over the years there have been literally hundreds of NES clone systems built around the NOAC. I am led to believe that in recent years NES patents have ran out and this is the reason we are beginning to see many NES clones hitting the US market place and being legal. Before you had to import things that were a bit on the shady side and illegal. And a lot of timesof a very cheaply low quality build.

The NOAC technology not being perfect results in some NES games playing less than perfect and there are some games that do not play at all. The main problems are, colors being off, sound not right, or garbled graphics, which could pertain to sprites or background. There seems to be different levels of success with the NOAC. Some clones work better than others in different areas. That may depend on the manufacturer. But all share the common problems. That being the situation, there are still loads of games in the giant NES library that are not hindered by any of the problems in being able to play the games. But as I said before, if you are the type of person that stops and says, "Wait a minute that color is a shade darker!" or "There is a crisp sharp twang there that I don't remember!" Then you need to stay with that old NES original hardware.

First impressions:
The box says "Classy." Very nice attractive packaging. The total design of the unit is almost a tribute to the original 8-bit NES system. It looks like a miniature version of that first big bulky gray NES system. The system itself is of a very nice sturdy quality build. Having purchased a few imported gaming stuff, I am impressed. This particular clone is produced or marketed, maybe both,by Messiah Entertainment Inc. This system was originally released in 2005.

My original interest that drew me toward this particular system clone is its ability to play both the NES and the Famicom games. They are both the same system, one was in Japan and the other here in the US. The main difference between the two is the pin-out that is used on the game carts. The NES used 72 pins and the Famicom used 60, making them non-interchangeable. An adapter would have to be used on the Original NES to play the Japanese games. This comes preparedfor both by way of having two game cart slots, one on top for the Famicom games and one in front (like the old NES) for the NES games. You cannot have a game cart in both slots at the same time. You are warned not to. I take it that it could damage the system, which is very understandable.

The controller that comes with the system is of a nice quality and feels nice, responsive, handles very well, and comfortable when playing, though, for some, it is not the original. The buttons are arranged very differently. The start and select are located above the A and B buttons, odd. There is also a turbo and slow motion feature built in. If this pad is a problem, no fear you can use all of the original NES controllers, light guns, etc. The system also has a built in wireless feature that accommodates the wireless controllers that are available, for purchase, from the Messiah Entertainment Inc.

And how are the games? They are the original Nintendo game carts. Messiah Entertainment Inc. has a list of compatible games on their web site. There are over 700 NES games that they have tested and found working and playable. All of my games, that I have, play great. I have no problem with any of them. The system has prompted me to look for more games to purchase. At this point flea markets, garage sales, video game store bargain bins, [...] become your best friend. Also all my Famicom games play with no problems. I would still advise cleaning all of your games very good before inserting them into the NEX, especially if they have been stored away for a while. I had no problems with getting anything to boot up and run. I have read that some say that the game carts fit tight and are troublesome to remove. But I had no problem, what so ever, even close to that type of experience. My game carts seem to fit like they do in the Original top loading NES that my daughter has.

Final thoughts:
When Messiah Entertainment first announced the Generation NEX, they gave the impression that it was a replacement for the aging NES. They did not, up front, reveal that the system was built around the NOAC. I think they paid dearly for that with all the negative feedback and reviews that are still floating around the net. If they had been more open, I think there would have been a more positive atmosphere around the NEX.

It is a high quality clone system. And it is up to the individual, whether or not, they deem that it is worth the price. You can get cheaper clones for much less, but from what I have seen from honest thorough comparative reviews, the NEX has a better performance with the NOAC when playing NES games. I got my NEX for a total of $[...] shipped to my door. You can purchase the original NES that has a new 72 pin replacement for less or about the same price as the NEX. You are then guaranteed full compatibility with all NES games. But to play Famicom games you will need a converter. For me, I feel that I got what I wanted and it satisfies my need. I like the very convenient size and the ability to play Famicom games without a converter. None of the games that I am interested in are incompatible with the NEX. At 53 years old, I am having a fun retro gaming experience.

Nintendo NES System - Video Game Console Bundle (Includes 2 Controllers / Zapper / Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt) Review

Nintendo NES System - Video Game Console BundleLooking at Pedro Games reviews - seem all positive.
But don't try to contact him for any reason - he is very nasty. All I did was question why he charged $20.99 for shipping vs $4.99. Felt it was way too steep compared to the others. His childish, sarcastic remarks were every uncalled for. If I am going to buy a product it will be from someone I can converse with if I need to - definitely not him!

Nintendo NES System - Video Game Console Review

Nintendo NES System - Video Game ConsoleArguably the single most important console in video game history, Nintendo Entertainment System (hereafter referred to as the NES), along with SUPER MARIO BROTHERS, singlehandedly resurrected the video game industry after the historic crash of 1983-1984. Rather than reviewing the system itself, which has been done many times, I think many people may find the history how of this revolutionary console came to the videogame industry's rescue very interesting; I know I do. I draw much of this information from various websites, one very good one in particular; unfortunately, I can't really plug them due to Amazon's policies. Email me if you want the websites.

By 1983, the gaming industry, in existence for a mere twelve years, had risen to an astonishing 3.2 billion dollar industry. Atari spearheaded the industry, which introduced its first console in 1977 (Atari Video Computer System), and since had grown to hold two thirds of the entire market. However, in 1984 all this would end with a thunderous crash. This concise overview will show you the history of the home consol crash and how the NES came to the rescue.

In 1976, Warner Communications bought Atari for $28 million from the company's founder, Nolan Bushnell. Over the next two years, Atari, suffering major production problems and Bushnell's bizarre management, lost Warner millions. Bushnell and Warner's CEO fought, and in 1978 Bushnell was forced to leave. Warner totally revamped the working style, and in 1979-1980, produced twelve new titles. However, Atari was still dragging down Warner's stock. Struggling to gain the market share, Atari made the smartest move they possible could have; in 1980, they began licensing arcade games, the first being SPACE INVADERS. Over the next two years, Atari overtook the market, bringing in over half of Warner's overall profits.

However, very significant problems would totally destroy the infant industry. In 1981, Atari released PAC MAN on the VCS, and, because it was such a huge arcade hit, quickly became a bestseller. Unfortunately, the quality was very low. This was a major blow to the company's image, with fans and critics alike extremely disappointed.

Another major stumble was one of video games' most infamous games, ET. Warner bought the rights from Spielberg for twenty one million dollars. Atari, expecting the game to be as big a hit as the movie, which was the highest grossing film at that point, purportedly made more ET cartridges than there were consoles themselves. ET proved to be a huge flop, nearly breaking Atari.

By 1983, Atari was in serious trouble. Suing Activision (which was disgruntled Atari employees who broke off and formed their own company) and Imagic, the two leading third party developers, Atari tried to gain control over its software catalogue. Atari lost the suits. Third party developers began popping up overnight, and the industry becomes saturated with very low-quality products. (One of the most controversial is CUSTER'S REVENGE by Mystique, where the goal is to rape a Native American woman while avoiding being shot by arrows.) The third-party developers went bankrupt; these cartridges were heavily discounted, and the major companies couldn't compete. Another factor is the home computer market, that was just starting to come alive in 1984. With an increasing amount of computer games and low prices, people started buying these over the consoles.

All these factors lead to the crash of 1984. In 1983 alone, Atari lost $356 million ($2 million daily). Warner sold Atari to Jack Tramiel, former head of Commodore. The video game industry died, with no major American corporation coming anywhere near it. Enter Nintendo.

A little history here will be highly illuminating as well. What many people don't realise is Nintendo is a very old company, founded in 1889 (yes, you read that right) as a playing card company. It became Japan's largest playing card company, and was very successful. In the 1960s, they moved away from the cards and got into the game and toy markets. (A very interesting sidenote: during that same decade, Nintendo's president opened up a `special hotel' rented `by the hour.' Supposedly, the married president was one of the hotel's top customers). In the 1970s and early 1980s, the company scored significant points with big arcade hits and the Game and Watch product line. In 1983, Nintendo released the Famicom (Family Computer). It was a massive hit in Japan. In 1983, Nintendo went to Atari because they wanted to release the Famicon to the American market. Do to complications I won't go into, the deal fail through. In 1984 they were looking to broaden their market share.

1985, Nintendo announced the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System. They release SUPER MARIO BROTHERS in Japan, scoring a huge hit. In 1986, the NES comes full throttle into the American market, quickly becoming the biggest selling console ever, largely because of that title. The NES owes much of its success to SUPER MARIO BROTHERS. Coming prepacked with the console, there are an estimated 40 million copies of SMB in existence, making it the highest selling video game ever.

Unparalleled, SMB blew open the doors to the videogaming world. With rich palettes of colour, eight four level worlds, spot-on play control, and expert level design, SMB was a much longer game than most of Atari's products and was a game unlike any other at that time. SMB also had the benefit of being very simple to grasp; run, jump, and fire. It was also the first side-sroller as we know it, though Atari's PITFALL set up the concept. Also, it's one of the best. Without SMB, NES wouldn't have been nearly as big a hit in the beginning.

In the end, Nintendo came at the industry's key moment. With a powerful new console (for that time) and a very well-designed game, Nintendo resurrected video gaming. With its phenomenal success of the NES and SMB, the video game industry once again took off, becoming one of the world's most significant economical contributors.

And we very largely have the NES to thank for it.
