Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball Review

Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League BaseballRead that title, and do some soul searching to find the answer we all seek. Where would we be without Ken Griffey Jr. baseball for SNES? I'll let you ponder that for a while. I'll tell you where we'd be:
1. We'd be deprived of hours upon hours of home run derby with classic hitters such as Can O'corn, Nick Noheart, and Barny Tater.
2. We'd be missing out on right fielders throwing absolute bullets from the fence to gun the fool who thought he could score.
3. We wouldn't understand what good music is, I mean, this soundtrack is unbeatable.
4. We wouldn't know that it was humanly possible to hit a 575 foot home run.
5. We've all learned you can never think of messing with a pickle because all infielders run a 2.4 40 yard dash (lightning speed)
6. There's the fact that every pitcher throws about 105 mph, more or less.

Basically, our lives would be dull and meaningless. We would know nothing of the true sport of baseball and how silly of a game it can be.

On the more serious side, this game is a classic, it has provided hours upon hours of fun for the young and old. It started a baseball revolution. Your Super Nintendo collection is incomplete without Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball. Play, laugh, learn, love...and stop reading my review it is numbing your mind.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves Review

Robin Hood: Prince of ThievesThe Robin Hood Nintendo game follows the plot of the Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. It is an Adventure/RPG.You play as Robin Hood as he fights to escape from a prison and return home. The game follows step by step through the movie and you fight to return to Castle Locksley, then over to Marian's home. You fight to escape to the forest and in various events throughout the game. You have to find newer and better weapons as well as items for healing.
One thing that this game does differently is how you fight battles. There are three modes. One is the normal mode where you are exploring and can run into people to fight. This is mostly top down, but from a lower height overhead. Most of the game uses this mode of exploration/fighting.The second mode is the melee mode. These are large scale battles (some of the characters from the movie also participate, but I don't believe that you can control them at all, my memory is a little fuzzy on this). The third mode is a duel.Several times throughout the game, based on events in the movie, you have to fight a duel. This is a side scrolling back and forth fight.
I'll be honest. This is not the best video game out there for the NES.My initial fondness for the game probably came from the fact that I loved the movie. The game is not extremely difficult and after playing it a couple of times there should be no problem in playing through the game and beating it.The game is mostly for fans of the movie, but anyone should be able to pick it up and understand what is going on.It just may not be nearly as much fun if you are not familiar with the movie. Not a great game, but not a worthless pile of garbage, either.I give it a mixed review and the game does not hold up very well over time.

Tetris Attack Review

Tetris AttackTetris Attack actually has little to do with the original Tetris except for the name. The object is to clear the blocks that keep rising in your screen by lining up a minimum of three of the same kind.Sound easy?It might be at first, but the longer you play the faster it goes and the harder it gets.
This game was the first one I bought when I bought my system a couple years back. For the first week, I was addicted, even seeing the screen in my sleep. It's still one of my favorites. When I'm looking to relax, I stick this game in and enjoy.
If you've never given Tetris Attack a chance, you're in for a treat.Get a copy of the game today and enjoy the puzzle.

Archon Game Cartridge for the Nintendo NES Review

Archon Game Cartridge for the Nintendo NESI recently purchased Archon for the NES. This is a truly unique game, in which you play on a puzzle-like chess board. Move pieces around and the team to capture all pieces of opposite color wins. However, when a piece lands on another piece of opposite color, it immediately switches to a new PvP battle-style screen. It's hard to explain, but truely unique and definetally worth a try for any NES collector.

Yoshi Review

YoshiThis is a pretty good game, much like Tetris. There is an original concept though, because little monsters drop down like blocks. They drop down, you do not turn them, instead Yoshi is at the bottom of the screen holding up four plates (to collect the monsters), and you move him around, and pivot these plates to collect the monsters. Its not that simple though, the only way to kill these monsters is to capture them into egg halves that drop down. First get a lower half of an egg, drop a few monsters onto the half egg, then drop the top half of the egg. Then the eggs, squeeze together killing the enemies! Like a verticle Tetris!

(NES) Ghosts "N Goblins Review

(NES) Ghosts 'N Goblinsnow the only thing bad about this game is thats it's extremely hard get hit two times and then you lose. every time you die it shows the level again just taunting you showing your on such a low level. once you get to the last boss after many trys you beat the boss and guess what it sends you back to the first level so you have to do it all again! after that you get up the last boss again then beat him the endings not good but the only fun thing is that it's a hard so if you want a very hard game then this is for you.

Game Genie Review

Game GenieThis is a really cool device to gain an advantage for a bunch of old but awesome snes games. Unfortunately Nintendo put a lockout chip in the last version of the Snes they released ( the smaller one with a push button reset switch )( It works on just about all of the older units with two large purple slider barswitches )
[web page] has a bunch of codes for just about any game you can think of, it also loads quick and has very little advertising.
Enjoy beating the **** out of all the games that used to be soo tough. There's even a code to beat all the Bosses in Chrono Trigger with one hit!!

Bubble Bobble Review

Bubble BobbleAlthough this game is really old (for a video game anyway0 it still ensnares you with its simplicity, and its simple but addicting gameplay. As you (or you and your friend, because it is two player) journey through a series of "caves" you blow bubbles that capture enemies, and pop them as well to advance to the next level. There are over 100 hundred levels that come in different shapes and with different enemies as well.I can honestly say that I can sit down and play this game for hours on end, and still be entertained FOREVER.Bubble Bobble definately ranks high on my list of most entertaining games to play. This one is a must get if you are afan of old school video games, it is a classic that entertaines the player very quickly and easily.

It's an RPG and is not that fun if you think it's action an all, it's just and rpg and all. You find items and use them againts people. That's it. Spider-man/X-Men Arcade's Revenge Review

Spider-man/X-Men Arcade's RevengeWhen I played this game I didn't think it sucked, and overall thought of it as an okay platformer. You play as Spiderman and the X-Men and your goal is to defeat some guy who's trying to take over the world and destroy them. The story is incoherent after that unfortunately. The graphics look great for a 2D game and the environments are wonderfully detailed. The character designs and enemy designs are great as well, and have a cartoony feel to them. The gameplay works fine most of the time, and really isn't a hassle. The flaws with this game are the sticky platforming obstacles which are difficult to figure out at times, the story sucks, the enemies are hard to kill sometimes when something is blocks them and the missions feel a little dull and repetitive. I didn't have a bad time playing this game, but it all depends; How much do you like Spiderman and the X-Men to buy this game or play it?

Classic NES Series: Donkey Kong Review

Classic NES Series: Donkey KongOkay ... okay... I get it now. This version of DONKEY KONG is NOT THE ARCADE version - it's a port of the NES version for that home system back in the day.So that is why the elusive 4th level seen in the arcades is not here.DONKEY KONG is a great game even at 3 levels, but consider that a previous GAME BOY edition had the cement/pie factory and 96 ADDITIONAL LEVELS AS WELL!
I'm still holding on to my $5 e-reader version as well as my e-reader versions of DONKEY KONG JR and DONKEY KONG 3!Why couldn't all 3 of these games been put into this cart?RETRO gaming is wonderful, but not when you feel cheated somehow.I suggest the true NES classics like SUPER MARIO BROS or LEGEND OF ZELDA!There's more bang for your buck!

Before Mario became super he was a brave carpenter (or so says one early promotional flyer) instead of a plumber and had an 800-pound gorilla on his back. The game looks great on both the Game Boy Advance and the Game Boy Player for the Nintendo GameCube. As the story goes this freak-of- nature gorilla kidnaps the beautiful girl. Mario being the chivalrous type runs to the rescue. To reach damsel in distress however Mario must avoid the gorillas killa posse of barrels fireballs and bouncing rivets.Along the way Mario picks up big points when he hammers barrels and fireballs and snags the umbrella purse and hat that the girl dropped during her abduction. Game Boy Advance SP Classic NES Limited Edition Review

Game Boy Advance SP Classic NES Limited EditionBeing a child of the mid to late 80s, a Nintendo was my life for much of my youth.Fond memories of Mario and Zelda and Tetris abound. As the Nintendo (what everyone calls an NES these days, but back then it was just a "Nintendo," then the SNES was the "Super Nintendo") was a beautiful piece of work, so is this GBA SP.
I had been putting off getting an SP.I'd bought a GBA when it came out, and by golly it was good enough for me until the DS.But a chance meeting with a preview article of the Classic Series melted any reservations I had about re-buying a Gameboy.
As I write this, the beautiful, sensual GBA is sitting on my desk.I will not lie about my fervent Nintendo fangirlism, so the rest of this review will probably sound kinda weird to any of you new-generation Sony worshippers.
The sleek lines of this handheld blow me away every time I look at it.Surely it is superior to every previous iteration of the SP.The slightly shiny silver outside - complete with a row of lines representing the top of the NES console.A classic red and black Nintendo oval logo complete the top half. The bottom as you may expect remains true to its roots as well. But the real prize is inside the flip-top screen.
Open up this GBA SP and prepare to remember why Nintendo is your god.The original Nintendo controller represented in new, squareish glory. The D-pad and buttons are a bit different, sure, but everything else makes me want to dig up my old controllers and stare at them, then switch to the SP, then switch again. It's really beautiful.
The SP, even with the new improved backlight, does kinda sit a bit uncomfortably in your hands compared with the first GBA.Plus the headphones thing (where you need a special adapter, etc).BUT!For anyone who has even ever ~looked at an NES, this GBA SP will make you want one.It has a tantalizing, hypnotic song that it will sing to you.
So, if you're debating whether or not you really need a GBA SP, the answer is now a resounding YES!

Wrecking Crew (Nintendo NES) Review

Wrecking CrewThis is a very fun and challenging game and in my opinion is better than all of the mario games made of the nes. This is is the only mario game where you actually have to think before you move because if you make the wrong move you might find your self stuck some where, and the only way to get unstuck is to restart the game. Classic Japanese torture technique.

Ice Hockey Review

Ice HockeyThis is a fun hockey game. It's Nintendo's 8-bit version of classic fun. So, your playing a hockey game on a 8-bit system. The graphics are not great. It's much better than Atari, but dont expect anything compared to todays game consoles.

You get to compete in one on one, one vs computer, and a world tour. The fun factor is when you creat your team, you can pick the size of your players. The bigger they are the slower they move! And its funny seeing a speeding skinny player slam in to a fat player. But the game is fast until Nintendo kicks in the slow motion act do to a poor processing chip.

Classic game but has ABSOLUTELY nothing on "Blaze of Steel" for Nintendo. Best Hockey game for the Ninteno 8-bit

Startropics Review

StartropicsStartropics, for those unfamiliar with this great game, is pretty much of the linear RPG type with some challenging puzzles thrown in the mix. You are Mike, who has just arrived at Coralcola to visit your uncle, Dr. J. You find out that he has been kidnapped and only you can save him.

Mike goes through the game equipped with a yo-yo. It proves to be a powerful tool, and it only gets stronger further into the game. You will most likely encounter some frustrating puzzles that seemingly have no solution, but have patience with this game. It is worth it when you figure it out. You will be tasked with conquering undergroung tunnels full of monsters, a haunted graveyard and more. Overall there is enough to do to take many hours away from your life.

This is my personal favorite NES game of all time, along with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, and if I could rate it higher than 5 stars I would. It was everything a game should be and I had a lot of fun (and frustration) playing this game. This is an essential title for NES owners, and can usually be found for cheap (under 10 bucks). Give it a try, I doubt you will be disappointed!

Mega Man X Review

Mega Man XYeah I know, Super Nintendo Games are outdated but I still play them like hell.It was when I came across Mega Man X4 on my playstation that I remembered I owned the first one.
The Mega Man X series takes off from where the original series left off, sorta.A new character named Zero is introduced, and for those of you who were tired of Dr. Wiley can now face a new boss named Sigma.
The story is not very understandable at first, but I gave it five stars because of how fun it was, and because you can't say its too difficult or too hard.Eventhough the final boss is a little hard.
There are also "capsules" in this one. These power up the abilities that Mega Man can have.In this first installment, you can't expect the capsules to really give you much. (That is if you played X2-X5 first, but I played them all in order.)But the game is fun either way.I would recomend this to any Mega Man gamer.

Rad Racer Review

Rad RacerYou play as a sportscar on your way in eight races against cars that all look the same. The play control is really bad as you can only go forward, nor can you even turn around, just move left and right. This was the first racing game for Nintendo, so what do you expect? There is still big challenge as you cross checkpoints to get more time, which makes the game so challenging, because there is so little time and the races are so tediously long. Another big thrill about the game was it is the first and only game that features 3D! The game came with 3D glasses and a 3D mode. Even though it never looked at all 3D, which is why this never caught on and no more 3D games were made.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade GameOk, this was 20 times better than the first Ninja Turtles game. What was Ultra/Konami thinking when designing the first game!?I'm not goin' strike at them hard because of the graphics, but the unfair difficulty, lack of actual Ninja Turtle characters, different abilities of each Turtle (making two of the four useless), and lack of connection with the cartoon series made the first game less than mediocre.Although the first game was a hit, Ultra Soft and Konami knew the messed up and they promised that the sequels will have better gameplay and characters, designed for younger kids (main target audience of Ninja Turtle fan base).

Ok, I do admit that the graphics were far inferior from the original arcade release, but a 8-bit console has techinical limitations and the game had to be designed to fit in with the limits and it has. The NES version's graphics were advanced for its time and it followed other arcade gameplays with only a few, but better exceptions.Adding two new levels was innovative (along with advertising Pizza Hut - you get a free pan pizza coupon with the purchase of the game), and so was adding three new bosses. Some of the original levels were longer than in the arcade version, but it was fun and a bit easier than the quarter sucking machine. Best thing of all were the choice of ninja turtle characters from the cartoon, with a few made up mini characters and bosses like Torra and Shogun.Rock Solider leaders, Granitor and General Tragg were the main bosses, Krang was the second to last boss (finally), you get to fight Baxter Stockman in not only human form, but also in his mutated form (instead of a rematch with Bebop and Rocksteady - probaly due to technical contraints for the NES), and Shredder may be more difficult than in the previous game, but you won't get bored in fighting him and the clones and wacking them several times with three different turtle moves (make sure you get the right one and watch out for his ligthing bolt sword).Instead of firemen, butterflies, flying robot heads, and all the other BS made-up enememies from the previous game, you get to battle hundreds of multi-colored footsoldiers whose attack and choice of weapon is unique with its color (this continues for the next two games). They also ride in helicopters, motorcycles, vehicles and skateboards.Other mini enemies include Mousers (of course), Roadkill Rodneys (from the second episode of the cartoon), Tubular Transports (flying robot flies that were used as Shredder's survalience on the third episode of the series), flying knife throwing ninjas, tigers, and more.

The levels were real fun (especially the expressway mini level where you ride your skateboard and knock out the foot soliders. The overall game was exciting and innovative and still is.The only flaw about this game is not adding a four player co-op like from the arcade (The NES just released a NES Satalite that allows two additional players in select games, so there was no excuse for not adding Turtles 2 and 3 to the list).I still play it in my old NES, so those that don't have an NES, get it for your Virtual Console, once they release it cause its fun.I will gurantee you that the third and fourth game are much more fun!!!

Paperboy Review

PaperboyThis was a pretty good transition from the Arcade game to the home system. PAPERBOY was pretty fun game for what it was. You are the local paperboy and your job is to deliver the paper to the designated houses but while you're on your route, you have to watch for dogs, lawnmowers, cars and other obstacles. And at the end of each route, you get a bonus round for some extra points.
Really though, this is a very simple game and the basis of it was also really simple but when it all came down to it, it was fun. I will admit for the advanced gamer, you probably wouldm't have as much fun because of the game's easy gameplay. But for younger gamers and beginning gamers, this was great for them.
I really only suggest this game to younger gamers and beginning gamers because it's just way too simple for the advanced gamer and I almost guarantee you, you'll get bored after a while (advanced gamers). If you're looking for other Arcade games that hit the NES, check out TMNT the Arcade Game, 720 and GAUNTLET.

Wizards & Warriors II: Iron Sword Review

Wizards & Warriors II: Iron SwordIron Sword is actually Wizards and Warriors Part 2.You can tell because the main character (a sword-swinging knight) is the same guy from the previous game.

In this adventure, you are no longer treated to infinite continues. This means the challenge is EXACTLY right.I can make it to the end of the game, but even after all these years I was never able to beat it.That final boss is HARD.

This game is probably better than the original if only because you now get to explore forest, water, ice and fire worlds.Yeah, I know, EVERY game seems to have those kind of levels.Remember, back in the late 80's a game like this was pretty influential and certainly unique. We were NOT exposed to countless games that were merely rip-offs of other games, unlike today, where it seems like platform games are basically a thing of the past.

Thanks to the lack of creative ideas to make something fresh in the world of platform gaming, people are now sick of the genre. The fact that everyone is now obsessed with realism in gaming means that an overwhelming obsession with a game like Iron Sword will never return. That makes the game stand out in a positive way, in my opinion.

I *strongly* believe, as crazy as this might sound, that the music in Iron Sword is the VERY BEST music a video game can possibly have.Yes, I know I'm *extremely* crazy for thinking this way, but it's true.I can't believe music THIS good even exists.Heck, I probably never would have even had an obsession with music if I never had encountered this excellent game.

I put the music in this game on the same level as the music from my favorite bands, like the Moody Blues.Iron Sword features melodic themes that actually keep building and building in melodies and musical ideas, something 95% of other NES games didn't do.Most NES games kept repeating the same couple notes over and over. Not so in Iron Sword. It's music on a whole other level.Almost like progressive rock music. Some of the programmers must have been fans of Genesis or Yes.

As for the gameplay, it's basically the same as the previous game except now, as I said above, you explore a variety of different worlds. The challenge has been increased a lot.You have to be careful not to die too many times or else you will have to return to the beginning of the game. Not really a bad thing, though. After all, NES games were challenging, and that's what made the games so addicting- we kept coming back to them despite dying repeatedly. If you were to compare the challenge in Iron Sword to other NES games, I'd say it's not so hard then. But if you want to compare Iron Sword to, oh I don't know, Resident Evil 4, Iron Sword is a pretty tough cookie then.

Overall, jumping around on high platforms slashing enemies never gets old when it's done correctly. Thanks to the wonderful graphics and play control, I truly love this game.

Karate Champ Review

Karate ChampIf you're looking for what started the whole fighting genre, this game is pretty close.
The premise is very simple:You are "karate man in white suit," and you must defeat "karate man in red suit"--over and over and over again. And, well, that's pretty much it.It's one of those old, neverending Nintendo or arcade-style games that you never actually finish.
The graphics are just basic NES fare, although quite primitive since it was an early NES title. Can't really comment much on the music, since there are really only 3 songs in the whole game: the opening theme, the victory song, and the game over song. The sound effects aren't much either--just generic swinging and hit sounds, the sound of points scrolling on the score, and the voice of the old referee saying "Begin!" "Point!" "Stop!" or "Judge!"All of them were pretty cool though.
Like the whole premise, the rules are simple:You fight round by round, and each hit scores either a full point or a half point, depending on how impressive of a move you used. The first one to reach two full points, or the one with the most points at the end of the time limit, wins.If you win, you get to play a bonus round in which you are trying to hit objects that are being thrown at you.The game ends when you get hit (which will probably be by the first object, until you get used to it).
The gameplay is what really stands out here. You wouldn't think so by just looking at it, but upon playing this game, I can see that there is more depth in this game's simple fighting engine than in many of the 3D fighters out there today. It's like this:Every different combination of a button and a direction results in a different move. Each different move is useful for any given situation.Certain moves will counter other moves.A sweep, for example, will counter a roundhouse, and a roundhouse, in turn, will knock a jumping opponent right out of the air. There are attacks that strike low, and some that strike high. Some strike in front of you and some strike backwards. There are some attacks which let you quickly whirl around and attack behind you.You can also jump horizontally to lunge toward your opponent, slip behind your opponent, or get away from the opponent. You can also jump vertically to dodge an opponent's low attacks, such as sweeps and low kicks. Some attacks will score more points than others, depending on the situation. For example, striking your opponent from behind or knocking them down with a counterattack will usually get you more points.
Ok, let me take a breath after all that...When you get down to it, it's an impressively deep fighting engine for such an old game, and that's what amazes me about it.It's also rather addictive.
If you just happen to be checking out really old games, or want a quick little diversion from Tekken and the like, check this one out.

The Magic of Scheherazade Review

The Magic of ScheherazadeKnowing the immense popularity of Zelda, you'd think at least a few people would have discovered The Magic of Scheherazade by now. Granted, it's a hard-to-spell title from an obscure company that only made six games for the NES (five of which sucked), but that just makes this a rare treasure from an unexpected source.

This game has a lot going for it. There's the action RPG element of Zelda (walk around an overworld stabbing/shooting guys; bosses; linear quest structure) along with the ingredients of a traditional RPG (HP/MP, leveling, magic, turn-based battles). It's the only game I know of from the 2D era that blended the two genres, and succeeded in making both modes of play fun. It's accessible yet has depth, is challenging yet fair, and the pacing feels just right (plus there's a save feature). As in all RPGs, random encounters are a fact of life, but in this game they're not an annoying pain in the ass (unlike in, say, Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior) partly because they only happen when you cross between rooms and partly because they don't happen every 20 seconds.

On top of nailing the gameplay, Scheherazade also has a colorful cast of characters (your allies), a charming sense of humor, and a good amount of creativity in the graphics, text, and level design. Best of all, it's a music lover's delight. Seriously, load this game up and tell me if you've ever witnessed a title screen with a more awesomely harmonious opening piece. Having such a mesmerizing digital symphony by your side for 10 straight hours (5 if you've done it before) makes the adventure that much more of a pleasure.

The plot is typical save-the-princess cheese, but who cares? All you need to know is that next to Super Mario 1 and 3, Zelda, 1943, and Double Dragon II, The Magic of Scheherazade kicks more ass than any game on the NES.

Retro Duo Twin Video Game System NES & SNES Review

Retro Duo Twin Video Game System NES & SNESIT works! The controllers are nice, although they aren't quite as heavy as the true SNES counterparts.

The Retro Duo Twin system itself is heavy and has excellent venting for heat control. It has played all my old games so far, including contra, super mario kart, mortal kombat, etc.

My major complaints are that the NES game cartridges are hard to eject (you have to really tug to get them free) and that some games seem like the colors and sounds are not 100% emulated (Super Mario Bros 3 for example.) This is mostly an issue with the NES part of the system, the SNES side of the Retro Duo Twin so far works flawlessly.

Contra Review

ContraThe First Contra game was fantastic. Most people, no doubt, have probably at least heard of the exploits of the game. No, Contra can't hold a candle up to games in terms of graphics and sound, and the people who bash on the game for that are probably too young to remember Contra, or they're too busy being stuck in the 3D era that side scrollers are too "kiddish" for them. Those gamers obviously haven't played old school.Contra is not only one of the hardest games out there (as most 8-bit and 16-bit games are a lot harder than the 32-bit and over generation), it's one the greatest of the NES generation.

What made Contra perhaps one of the greatest games wasn't just it's run and gun action. It was also the way it handles its two-player co-op.Rather than taking turns like in a game like Mario, or waiting for someone to switch to you like say... Donkey Kong Country, Contra put both characters on screen at a time and had you both running and gunning down enemies. The screen kept moving along as well. One character might end up leaving the other behind.Either way, Contra was one of the first games that forced you to work together instead of competing.Over the course of the game you (and your partner if you had one) would collect different types of weapons that went flying over head.

You began with the default rifle which only fired one shot at a time.Over the course of the game you could find different sorts of weapons. You could get a machine gun, a laser, a flamethrower or a spread gun. Also, there was a barrier, a rapid fire and a super bomb. You could only hold one type of gun at a time, but the latter group could be obtained without replacing the gun.Any Contra veteran can tell you that of all the guns, the Spread Gun was the best of the lot.It was powerful, spread your shots out and could hit anything.Combine the Spread Gun with Rapid Fire and you were nearly invincible.Keyword: Nearly.

Contra is often cited (along with Mega Man and its sequel Super C) as being one of the hardest 8-bit games out there. This is because when it came to your lives in Contra, you died in one hit.Not only that but you only began with two lives.Konami, feeling that yes, they had made a hard game, supplied gamers with a code they could use.Over the years this has become known to be the Classic Konami Code: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start.Any old school gamer who played Contra KNOWS this code.It gave you thirty lives. If, however, you really wanted to show your skills at Contra, you played without the code and you tried not to get hit at all!It can be done, but it takes a lot of practice.

Graphic and Sound wise, it's unrealistic to think the game could hold a candle up to the likes of Contra: Shattered Soldier or something like Metal Gear Solid 3.This doesn't mean the sound in Contra is bad. It's rather tiring to talk to some gamers who dismiss Contra simply because it's old, or because it can't survive. This, of course, is untrue, as many NES and SNES games have become some of the most sought after of all time.A game made in the 80's is not going to look like a game made in the new millenium. It seems kind of strange (and almost stupid) to have to point that out to the so-called "modern" gamer, when no one has to point out that a movie made in 1986 won't look like a movie made in 2006.If that makes me snobbish, so be it, but the modern gamer today does need to learn that the NES is not capable of, and will not be capable of, what the XBOX360 can do, and to compare to the two is like comparing apples and bananas. However, I find the music in Contra to be among the best of the 8-bit generation (nothing matches the very first Super Mario Bros., however).I often find myself humming these tunes.

Contra truly is one of the greatest games ever made. Not only did it pioneer two player co-op (the other game that comes to mind that did it so well is Turtles II), but it also provided the challenge that so many modern games are missing today. One hit kills, and being a one-man army up against it all. Some deaths might seem inevitable, but on the whole, Contra is a fantastic gaming experience. Those who have an NES (or perhaps an emulator) should own and play this game.At least for old time sake.

Bible Adventures Game Cartridge for the Nintendo NES Review

Bible Adventures Game Cartridge for the Nintendo NESBible Adventures' publisher, Wisdom Tree, made several bible-oriented video games.Bible Adventures is definately one of their best.Consisting of 3 different games, Noah's Ark, Moses, and David, It provides hours of fun playing through the levels.Noah's Ark is the easiest, consisting of finding 2 of every animal, then collecting food before the flood. The last level requires you to find them in the dark, only aided by flashes of lightning and fireflies.Moses is the fastest playing game. You play as Moses' mother as she escapes the Egyptians to deliver her baby to the Nile.Dodging brickthrowers, guards, and spiders, you have many challenges before you can bring your baby to safety.David is definately the hardest. You start out by easily shepherding your sheep for the night, saving them from lions, squirrels and rams. The last level, however, is near impossible, as you fight Phillistines and finally Goliath with only a slingshot.

In conclusion, if you still have a NES system that still works, you must add this game to your collection!

Final Fantasy Review

Final FantasyRemember those Jeff Rovin books entitled How to Win at Nintendo Games? I first heard of Final Fantasy in one of those books. Upon being pursuaded I decided to try my hand at a new side of video gaming--RPG's. Unlike the Zelda games, the graphics were SHARP and BRIGHT. Not the stupid pastel-colors in earlier NES games. When you first pop the game in, the blue narrative screen comes up and the Final Fantasy Prelude plays. But where's the title, you ask? I'll explain later. Then you name your four characters, and the best part is that you can choose which TYPES of characters you want EVERY time you start again! Do you want muscle, or magic? Fighter, Thief, Black Belt, White Mage, Red Mage and Black Mage. After this, the fantasy begins . . . .The princess has been kidnapped by the evil knight Garland, who lives far to the north on this tiny island continent. The four warriors beef up and face Garland, whereupon he says, "You impertinent fools! I, Garland, shall knock you all down!" Then the first major battle in the FF series takes place. But the title screen STILL hasn't appeared yet. Back at your home castle, the king and queen are so happy that you saved the princess that they agree to build a bridge spanning over to the other continent. You step onto the bridge . . . and THAT'S when the title screen appears, when the Final Fantasy (anthem, I guess you'd call it) plays. In short, the first hour of the game was just a PROLOGUE--like they have in books. I've played all the way up to FF9, but that title screen still impresses me. I hope you know that I'm writing all this from memory--that's how good this game is. Even now, USED copies of Final Fantasy cost ... I could write on and on and on, but I think I got enough down to encourage people to play this game.

Super C Review

Super CThen you need to pick up Super C, because of all the Contra games, I still find this to be the hardest of the lot. However, Super C is a game where you can't wimp out.Much like the first Contra, it takes practice to learn. However, as far as advancing the series goes, Super C does it in the way a game ought to do it.It keeps the same basic gameplay, but it throws in new enemies, harder levels and different level designs.Simply put, mastering the first Contra doesn't give you an edge in Super C.

There are eight levels in the game, and it works exactly as the first Contra did in this respect. You will go through, running and gunning through tons of enemies. You'll find many weapons for you to use. They all come from the previous Contra game. You'll find a machine gun, flame thrower (there are two types this time), laser and the Spread Gun.Again, as any Contra veteran can tell you, the Spread Gun is perhaps the best weapon you could hope to get.Strong, and can hit just about anything.

What makes Super C much harder than the first Contra game is simply that there is more stuff that comes at you.More enemies, and more gun shots to avoid.Combine that with the fact that the Classic Konami code DOES NOT work with this game. One hit, you're dead, and you've only got two lives to start with. You earn more by scoring lots of points, but with bosses that are much more difficult in scope and enemies that take a lot more time to predict, Super C will have you dying of frustration (perhaps even literally).

Super C does two player co-op exactly as the first one did it.Again, there are few games that do two player co-op better thanthe Contra series.Super C is no exception.

The music, while not better than the first Contra, is still fantastic.Graphic wise it's also better than the first Contra. It uses the same sprites but the environments are far more detailed.Allowing for more populated levels.

Old school gaming almost doesn't get any better.

Product Description:
THIS IS THE NES NINTENDO VIDEO GAME VERSION. ALL-TIME CLASSIC The original arcade version of Super Contra played essentially the same as its forebearer. The main difference was in its versatility. While the original "Contra" had three versions of gameplay (side-scrolling, up-scrolling, and pseudo-first-person), Super Contra added a top-view perspective as well as improving the scrolling levels by including inclined surfaces. As a result of this and changes to the enemy forces, it was a more difficult game to master. A quirk that it shared with the original Contra was the usefulness of the "Spread" gun. This gun made advancing through the levels much easier. It was a common occurrence that players reset the game if they lost this weapon, even though they were at a high level in the game. To beat the game required much more skill and experience than in the original.

Simpsons: Bart Vs. The Space Mutants Review

Simpsons: Bart Vs. The Space MutantsI can't believe no one has reviewed this game so far. This is one of the NES's most interesting games, because it seemed like EVERYONE was playing it back in the day.Just when you think you were the only one who owned Bart vs. the Space Mutants, think again!

I figure I mine as well drop a review for this game to celebrate the Simpsons 20th season coming up.... later today (it's 3:30 am at the time I write this).20 years of the greatest comedy ever created!

Well, the game is REALLY hard (it's the NES, what do you expect!!)The very first level is a skateboard level where you have to move around objects, and jump over them. It's a lot harder than it sounds.Maybe with some serious practice the game gets easier, I don't know, but I was struggling BIG time with this game as a kid, and continue to struggle with it.

My favorite memory was the giant Nintendo Power poster of this games cover that I hung up on the wall for years and years, until I thought I was too old to have posters on my wall so I took them all down.I still kept it though!

Classic NES Series: Castlevania Review

Classic NES Series: CastlevaniaI remember playing this game years upon years ago and still cant believe i beat it while i was about 8 years old. Yikes!

This classic, which spawned tons of great Castlevania games which are still going strong, is intensely difficult and had me on the verge of throwing my Gameboy at the wall more than once.

The first level of this game is extremely easy and gets you into the feel of the game. However, levels 2-5 are extremely hard. From the first time you fight the flying medusa heads or jumping igors you will loathe them and probably have nightmares of them knocking you into pits.

Later in the game you are only allowed 4 hits total before you meet your maker while some of the bosses, like the grim reaper, need about 20 hits to take em down. Not to mention just about every 'jump' you have to make in this game is surrounded by annoying enemies ready to knock you into a sudden death plummet.

Still, this game does bring back fond memories of the fun yet frustrating game. Now we just need them to bring back Castlevania 2 and 3 for the Gameboy...

Exodus: Journey To The Promised Land game for Nintendo NES Review

Exodus: Journey To The Promised Land game for Nintendo NESIn my lifetime as a "gamer", I have played challenging games (Mario, Zelda, etc.) on consoles ranging from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the XBOX 360, as well as being a huge fan of the "Myst" PC games. That being said, "Exodus" for the NES is easily the most difficult video game I have ever attempt (and am confident I ever will attempt).

This game, from the now long-defunct religious-based company Wisdom Tree, completely rips off the NES game Crystal Mines (apparently copyright laws were not enforced in the 1980s!), instead inserting Bible hero Moses as the main character in his quest to collect enough manna and question marks (yes, a strange game indeed) to complete each stage.

For about the first 15 (out of 100) stages, the game is relatively straightforward and quite fun, as you must use both your action skills and thinking cap to defeat each level.Very quickly, however, the game goes from fun to difficult, then to mind-boggling, and finally to downright impossible.

Two main factors make this game the peak of gaming difficulty: First, like many NES games, is the fact that your Moses is defeated with just one "hit", making you have to run a perfect level to succeed. However, what really amps up the difficulty is that each level is essentially a puzzle in order to collect all the requisite items and find the hidden exit.Items must be strategically moved, baddies strategically taken care of, and most of the time (at least in the later levels) there is only ONE solution...leading to hours of head-banging, controller-flinging frustration.Remember the old PC game Klotski?Imagine playing that on a clock with guys trying to kill you, and that is the gist of Exodus.

All in all, though, this is actually a pretty fun game for those of you who don't mind a challenge (i.e. Myst fans may be up to the challenge, while those who revel in first-person shooters will not). The highest level I have ever seen reached in the game was 97, at which point it takes Mr. Dream-like reflexes and mind to rival NASA scientists.Has anyone in the history of gaming ever actually beaten the game?If so, please comment!

ZELDA II:THE ADVENTURE OF LINK (NES NINTENDO VIDEO GAME VERSION) Review

ZELDA II:THE ADVENTURE OF LINKThe one thing many people seem to cling to with Zelda is the top-down view. MANY Zelda games utilize this view and Zelda II is the exception to that rule. That's right the game is a side scroller and because of that, Zelda II gets a lot of heat. But let's take this game on its own and forget about the first Zelda game. Now what do you have? That's right, a classic! Zelda II plays more akin to an actual role-playing game and it's a platformer and follows more like Simon's Quest which was another game that differed from the original.

In Zelda II you need to travel all over Hyrule and find all the temples and defeat all the bosses. Does this sound familiar? If you played Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64 it should since that EXACTLY what you do there as well (granted Ocarina is more of a blending of the original Zelda, Zelda II and turning it all into a 3D game). But why does Ocarina get all the praise and Zelda II get all the boos if they are almost the same game? I'll never understand that one. ;)

Also, Zelda II is HARD. The controls take some getting used to but at least they are responsive. Gameplay wise, Zelda II is completely different, but both Zelda II and Zelda I are classic video games. I highly recommend purchasing Zelda II for your library.

Friday the 13thThis game is truly amazing for NES, even though it is very old and for NES it is still pretty cool. You can be one of many teenager (they look like kids though) to battle the great Jason and look for the missing children. Jaosn is very hard to kill, that the only reason I gave this a 4 instead of 5, he is creepy though, you find him in houses. Its a big level, with many houses, if you lucky you will go into the house with Jason and fight him , bu he allways comes back of course!
