Well, I was 12 when this game came out in '88. I remember it fondly, as I was into the whole general area of culture which included thrash metal, skating, comic books and horror movies, and so I recently bought a copy in a used game store so's I could settle in with some nice, nostalgic gaming. So I start to play and, WHOA DUDE, I can't believe I was ever skilled with these crap controls; I used to be able to pull every trick volitionally in freestyle! I used to be able to actually leave the ramp in the high jump! I shut it off after about 10 unsatisfying <-(understatement) minutes. The only event that was actually playable was the pool joust. Then I remembered: I USED TO PLAY THIS GAME WITH THE MAX CONTROLLER!! Yes, the nes MAX controller is essential to actually PLAY this game.I don't have any problem with the graphics or sound.
To me the game does a great job of representing aspects of the culture.
How much fun is this game? Well, without the MAX controller it is ridiculously un-fun, 1 out of 5 stars. WITH the MAX controller back in those days of '88 it was probably a 4.5 out of 5 stars for me. It was fun once I mastered the controls and friends came over to compete.
