Durning the game, you only have two characters that stay with you, learn new magic, or can buy and use armor and weapons. All other characters are "hired" mercenaries.Eventually, their powers no longer match up with the monsters you face and you need to hire new ones. You can even use a spell to hire old mercs that you have let go!
Magic is a little different, too.Instead of having separate MP, your characters use their HP energize their spells. No more Meteo at 1 HP!Also, you learn spells by combining elements. Their are eight elements that you purchase in towns. The game automatically combines the new element with each previous element that you have to come up with new spells. Each element has a strength rating, so if you use fire spells a lot, your fire element will become more powerful. The ultimate spell combines all 8 elements. You need it to beat the game, of course.
Anyway, this game can be a lot of fun.The only real bad part is that the graphics aren't the best, and characters don't show up in the fight screens (kinda like dragon warrior on NES I think). It definitely has some fresh ideas, and is great if you are looking for something new from something old.
