A Boy and His Blob Review

A Boy and His BlobThe Wii has become the welcoming home for a series of wonderful 2D games lately, from Muramasa: The Demon Blade to World of Goo, and the forthcoming New Super Mario Bros Wii (worst...title...ever).Add to this list A Boy and His Blob, which is an ultra-charming reimagining of the NES "classic."I say "classic" because, like Battletoads, it's one of those old games that people remember fondly until they try to play it again and realize just how crazy hard the game is.

The Wii version is much easier than the NES game in some ways, although it offers up plenty of challenge in its own right. The boy now has an unlimited number of jellybeans to feed the blob, which means that you can now focus on the puzzle at hand rather than worrying about rationing and backtracking.Further, there really is no backtracking anymore since the Wii version does not contain an open world; the game is split up into self-contained levels in four unique worlds. There is a final goal to reach in each level, but there are also three treasure chests hidden in each one.Get all three chests and you open a whole new challenge level at your treehouse "hub."Beat the challenge and you're rewarded with behind-the-scenes footage of the game in progress, including sketches and artwork. It's a great system that's easy to understand and really boosts the replay value of the game.

The game is beautiful. It's hand-drawn and the level of detail is astounding, in a subtle kind of way.Stop for a while and appreciate the light swaying of trees in the background, the animated frogs jumping at your feet, and the very nice lighting effects, especially during the night stages.Like a Miyazaki film, you can feel the love that was poured into this game.Heck, the animators even went so far as to include a feature where you can hug and scold your blob, for no other reason than "because you can."These elements also greatly add to the charm. The music is also subtle but quite nice.Chances are you won't be humming the tunes later, but the music fits well with the visual style.

Controls are tight, for the most part. Some sticky points can come in when you're trying to direct the trajectory of your jellybeans, which requires a very light touch on the analog stick. Also, flying can feel too loose and the screen gets kind of jerky, which leads to quite a few accidental deaths.Luckily, there are a wealth of save points within each level so you're never sent too far back after a death. My biggest beef with the game is that only one player can save a game at a time.My fiancee and I are both big puzzle fans and it's annoying that we can't each have our own game going at the same time.

Long story short, buy this game if you're a fan of puzzle games. The pace is not fast, but you'll love the animation and the challenging levels that build in the latter half of the game.Support 2D games, let the developers know that there's still a market out there for them.

Super R-Type III Review

Super R-Type IIIThis game is pretty damn cool.It is a challenging, yet not impossible side-view space shooter with great graphics and awesome power-ups.You get to pick between 3 types of detachable ship cannons, and you can switch to hyper mode, which is ausome too. Also, the checkpoint system is very good, because you don't have to go back to the 1st level once you lose all your ships and get game over. You get to start in the same level, at the same checkpoint, just without the ship power-ups.Also, much like the gradius series, there is no r-type II (at least for americans) just the original, and III.

The only thing i'm wondering about is the price. 100 bones and up?when i bought it from ebay (for a grip less,) the cheapest amazon had it at was 240!!does anyone know why?is this game hard to find or rare?

Shadowrun Review

ShadowrunRating--92 out of 100--

A niche title in every sense of the word, Shadowrun received mild praise when it was first released for the Super Nintendo years ago. However, as the game is based on a role playing game, much like Dungeons and Dragons, it has built a strong fan base over the years. Those who can remember playing this game, can easily be brought back to its seamless world which some might overlook and just brush off to the side. The idea for the Matrix movies obvioussly extends from this Role Playing series as the game centers around your character, who wakes up after seemingly being dead, to continue his search for vengeance against the ones who killed him.
The gameplay is very straightforward in termsof shooting, as when you press the fire button a crosshair appears on the screen and allows you to shoot anywhere in the range of the screen. As you progress forward into the game your character builds up Karma points that can then be used to raise his strength, health, weapon, or magic skills. While the shooting is a bit harrdto get used to, and the game offers a steep learning curve, as the difficulty in this game is pretty tough, the storyline itself easily makes up for it and drives you toward the end of the game as you search for the awnsers leading to your demise.
As you fight your way through the game you will get new weapons, get new skills that allow you to hack into the matrix better, as well as recruit other shadowrunners as well to help you along your quest. You fight several bosses along the way, and the game never fails to impress with its startling revelations hour after hour. Overall an excellent game, with well done music as well, although some of the songs ae repeated numerous times (this was SNES you know), but this does not take away from this fine gaming experience. But yeah what the hell did happen to part 2 though?

S.O.S: Sink or Swim Review

S.O.S: Sink or Swim2D Sidescrolling adventure, One player. More for mature players. As a video game lover, S.O.S. is the greatest console game of its time. You play as your choice of 4 gentlemen on a cruise liner that is soon to be doomed, as a vicious storm rages and a huge tidal wave rushes toward the boat. Just as you get accustomed to your surroundings, the wave hits, turning the ship UPSIDE DOWN. You awaken, finding yourself literally on the ceiling as the ship had been turned over. Your goal is to find a way out of this ship, while meeting other survivors along the way. As you meet the other survivors, you have a choice as a stronger willed person to convince them to go with you, or leave them behind. The catch with this game as far as trying to help others survive is that the ship is filling with water, and it shifts positions as it sinks and as you try to discover your way out.
