A Boy and His Blob Review

A Boy and His BlobThe Wii has become the welcoming home for a series of wonderful 2D games lately, from Muramasa: The Demon Blade to World of Goo, and the forthcoming New Super Mario Bros Wii (worst...title...ever).Add to this list A Boy and His Blob, which is an ultra-charming reimagining of the NES "classic."I say "classic" because, like Battletoads, it's one of those old games that people remember fondly until they try to play it again and realize just how crazy hard the game is.

The Wii version is much easier than the NES game in some ways, although it offers up plenty of challenge in its own right. The boy now has an unlimited number of jellybeans to feed the blob, which means that you can now focus on the puzzle at hand rather than worrying about rationing and backtracking.Further, there really is no backtracking anymore since the Wii version does not contain an open world; the game is split up into self-contained levels in four unique worlds. There is a final goal to reach in each level, but there are also three treasure chests hidden in each one.Get all three chests and you open a whole new challenge level at your treehouse "hub."Beat the challenge and you're rewarded with behind-the-scenes footage of the game in progress, including sketches and artwork. It's a great system that's easy to understand and really boosts the replay value of the game.

The game is beautiful. It's hand-drawn and the level of detail is astounding, in a subtle kind of way.Stop for a while and appreciate the light swaying of trees in the background, the animated frogs jumping at your feet, and the very nice lighting effects, especially during the night stages.Like a Miyazaki film, you can feel the love that was poured into this game.Heck, the animators even went so far as to include a feature where you can hug and scold your blob, for no other reason than "because you can."These elements also greatly add to the charm. The music is also subtle but quite nice.Chances are you won't be humming the tunes later, but the music fits well with the visual style.

Controls are tight, for the most part. Some sticky points can come in when you're trying to direct the trajectory of your jellybeans, which requires a very light touch on the analog stick. Also, flying can feel too loose and the screen gets kind of jerky, which leads to quite a few accidental deaths.Luckily, there are a wealth of save points within each level so you're never sent too far back after a death. My biggest beef with the game is that only one player can save a game at a time.My fiancee and I are both big puzzle fans and it's annoying that we can't each have our own game going at the same time.

Long story short, buy this game if you're a fan of puzzle games. The pace is not fast, but you'll love the animation and the challenging levels that build in the latter half of the game.Support 2D games, let the developers know that there's still a market out there for them.

Bubsy Review

BubsyIn this game you are a cat who in the course of collecting yarnballs save the universe from certain alien destruction. You also wear a t-shirt with and exclamation point and have nine lives (YES!!). It's goofy and fun. I sod my original system but now I realize that games today just aren't fun anymore. So, I'm saving up for an SNES and all my old games. Yippee! This is going to be one of the first I buy back!!

Metal Warriors Review

Metal WarriorsMany of the SNES games out there have been either too boring or highly overated. This overlooked game ranks #1 in any game system I've ever played. You can chose a battle suit out of assorted suits ranking higher or lower depending on their abilities and original design. Then, you're taken into different side- scrolling arenas where you duke it out with your oppenent with different weapons. There's even power ups to boost your stength and techniques.
The best part of the game is that you can leave your battle suit as a tiny character and hunt in smaller tunnels for hidden power ups during the fight. In this mode, you're even armed with a little "pea shooter" if you dare taking on the enemy. You sure get your kicks in 2 player when you take out the other player's pod and proceed to terminate its survivor while you are armed a billion times superior.Or, even worse, have them beat you up, and retreat where only he/she can get you by jumping out, where you'll then take their healthy suit. It's a crime to have so much fun at another's expense. Very rich.

The fantastic fun factor of this game never ends. Unfortunately, this game was made in a limited quantity earlier on, hence its hefty price, but it's worth it if this type of game appeals to you.If you like action in battle, strategy or fighting games, this may be for you.Games like Mechwarrior and Armored Core were based off of this.Stick with the original.

Mega Man Review

Mega ManThe first Megaman game I ever played was MM3, and after that I played a couple of later MM games before I finally played the original Mega Man. I immediately noticed several differences, but for a first game, this was pretty good. It's a bit clunky and simplistic compared to its successors (much like Final Fantasy 1) but is still a nice, solid game. Definitely not the best of the Mega Man series, this game does deserve a try.

Mega Man 2 Review

Mega Man 2Mega Man II, with huge levels (for the NES), and great graphics (again, for the NES), would establish Mega Man (Rock Man in Japan), as a commercially viable video game character who would later become the most prolific character in terms of video game releases (and by this, I mean full fledged releases, not cameos, in which Mario takes the cake). But his success is owed to this pheonomenal game. The first, although somewhat successful, did not have the commercial impact as this did.Repeating the formula of the first Mega Man with giving you multiple stages and you chosing which one you want to tackle first and adding two bosses and dropping the score you get when beating the bosses, Capcom came up with 8 great bosses and a tremendous game.A large part of the fun is figuring out the order in which to beat the bosses. This also allows you to up the difficulty level if you want an extra challenge, as each of the boss's weapons work against another specific boss. The most difficult, as I remember, was Flash Man's stage. Those beams got me all the time. But don't worry, you can clear all eight stages. And once you do, going to Dr. Wiley's castle and attempting to figure out all the complexities only add to it.Top of the line graphics, wonderful music, amazing game play, what more could you want? This has all the markings of a bona-fide classic.

Super Metroid Review

Super MetroidIt's sort of funny how I came to own Super Metroid.Back in 1995, I had some money and I was looking to buy some used Super Nintendo games at the local Movie Gallery.I found one that I wanted, but I had enough money to buy one or two more.I didn't really see any others that I was dying to have, but Super Metroid looked spectacular from the back of the box and I had always heard about how great it was, so I went ahead and bought it.Little did I know that it would turn out to be my favorite game of its kind, and possibly my favorite video game of all time!
When you first start a new game of Super Metroid, a short cinema that consists of 3D pictures and dialogue will start showing and telling the story.I could tell you the story, but that would spoil it.
Your job is to control Samus Aran, and guide her through several different and challenging worlds that mainly consist of futuristic-looking aliens as enemies. While you make your way through the game, you can always pause the game and look at the map to see where you need to go and where you're currently at.
Samus always has a gun that you can use, but there are several other weapons and gadgets that you can find somewhere in the game, and then use. There are missiles, super missiles, bombs, super bombs, other kinds of beams such as an ice beam, new suits such as a gravity suit for the underwater environments, the ability to run EXTREMELY fast, a grappling hook, X-ray vision goggles, extra energy units, and much more.
But it's not a piece of cake for Samus. All over the place, are several different enemies that can fly, eat Samus alive, jump from one side of a room to the other, and more. There are also AWESOME bosses that you have to defeat. These bosses can range from a towering dragon that throws claws at you, a bird that has wings that never get tired, to the all-powerful Mother Brain, and others.
Pretty much, Super Metroid is mainly about exploring the different environments.Samus starts out at scratch, with only one energy unit and a basic gun.You must find missiles, extra energy units, new suits, and all the other items, in order to be able to use them. The more items you find, the better off you'll be, and the better ending that you'll see at the end of the game.
There are also items other than weapons or powerups that need to be found in each world, such as save points (for saving your game), map data, and more.
Everything about Super Metroid couldn't have been any better. The graphics are haunting, well detailed, and couldn't have been any better for this type of game. The backgrounds have great effects such as lightning or morphing effects, and the characters in the game look very sci-fi and detailed.Just like the graphics do, the sound effects and music add to the science fiction and horror theme of Super Metroid.I'm one of the few lucky people in the world who is fortunate enough to own the Super Metroid soundtrack (it was only made in Japan and it's VERY hard to find), and let me tell you, it has the best music I have ever heard in a video game. All the tracks have that horror sound to them and they're all overly catchy.
As for sound effects, all of the sounds from the explosions, to the screeching and terrorizing voices of the enemies, are unbelievable.Super Metroid's control is slick, without being too touchy or sluggish; it's perfect in other words. Finally, Super Metroid has the best replay value of any adventure game I've ever played.I've went all the way through the game at least 50 times, and I'm still not tired of it!And I KNOW that I will NEVER get tired of playing Super Metroid. It's fun to see how many of the items you can find and how fast you can get through the game.
If there is anything bad about Super Metroid, it's the fact that it is only a one-player game.BUT, it is still one of the best games ever made.Super Metroid is as close to perfect as any game that has ever been made, in my opinion.
If you own a Super Nintendo, Super Metroid is a MUST-HAVE!It's not only one of the best games for the Super Nintendo, it's one of the best video games of all time, for any system.Electronic Gaming Monthly recently published a list of the 100 best video games of all time, and they chose Super Metroid as the best game of all time. That's right, they chose it as #1.When you play it, you will see why!Get it today while you can!

Mega Man 3 Review

Mega Man 3MEGA MAN II is generally considered the breakout game for our titular blue bomber, and for good reason: it fixed all the problems found in the first Mega Man, and was one of the best games for the NES.Truthfully, it's the only Mega Man game I had for the NES in the late 1980s and early 1990s, though I played the first game quite a bit as well.As good as MMII is, is it really the best Mega Man game ever, let alone in the classic series?

If it weren't for MEGA MAN III, I would unequivocally say yes.MEGA MAN III is easily as good as MMII, and opens up the Mega Man gameplay, expanding Mega Man's repertoire.

Major new features introduced in MMIII
*Slide - Mega Man can now slide, creating new possibilities for level design.
*You can now carry up to 9 energy tanks, rather than 4 like MM II
*Due to the introduction of the Doc Robot levels, this is by far the longest of the six NES MM games.
*Rush, Mega Man's iconic robotic dog, makes his debut here.
*Proto Man, masquarding as the mysterious Break Man, debuts as well.
*Another notable feature is this is the first game that has accurate cover art on how Mega Man actually appears in the game.MM is notoriously bad cover art, and MMII's cover art has MM holding a gun rather than his arm cannon. Not bad but not great. This is definitely an improvement over the last two.

MMIII actually has the best story of all six NES titles.Dr. Light and Dr. Wily are working together to build a giant peace keeping robot named Gamma. However, the eight robot masters that the two designed to help keep the peace go beserk, stealing 8 power crystals. The two scientists quickly call Mega Man into action.

Mega Man must defeat the eight bosses to regain the crystals. This set of levels is probably my favorite in any Mega Man game. They're all very well designed, and just flat-out fun to play. The Shadow Man level and Snake Man level are both great.

But wait, there's more. After defeating the eight robot masters, four new levels open up (they are remixed or altnerate versions of four regular levels), and robot masters named Doc Robots are masters of these levels. There are two Doc Robots per level. While all the Doc Robots look the same, they are actually programmed to act like one of the robot masters in MEGA MAN II.When you reach the Doc Robot's lair, the sprite of one of the Mega Man II bosses descends from top of the screen down into Doc Robot, like the spirit of that perspective boss is inhabiting or animating the Doc Robot's body.

Once you defeat the 8 Doc Robot masters, another level opens in the center of the portrait page, entitled BreakMan.It is a simple one screen level, where you must fight ProtoMan.Ultimately, it is revealed Proto Man is Mega Man's brother, and built before Mega Man.Proto Man, who has been kept ambigious throughout the game, has been helping train Mega Man with each fight.

After you finish your training level with Proto Man, you now learn that Dr. Wily has stolen the power crystals Mega Man recovered, and has holed up in a new Skull Castle, intent on activating Gamma and reprogramming him to begin yet another attempt to take over the world via thru the campaign of bloody massacre or pogrom.

Wily's Castle features several cameos or references to the first two games.
*The famous Rock Monster (AKA the Yellow Devil) from the first game makes a return appearance, with a newly designed appearance.
*Gamma looks a lot like Gutsman (who, of all the villains in Mega Man, makes the most cameo appearances in other games, his likeness also appears as a Wiley Castle Boss in MMII).
*The boss guarding the transporter room in the fourth portion of Dr Wily throws rocks like Gutsman.
*Mega Man must fight his clone, just like the original MEGA MAN.Thistime around, there are three platforms, each with a separate clone. One clone is real, the other two holograms, and the real clone's location constantly changes between the three platforms.

The Dr. Wily stages are fun, although the last incarnation of Dr. Wily is the weakest of all six NES Wily bosses. With a single top spin, you destroy him.

The only two negative things I have to say about the game is this: the story is not really explained, and the inclusion of Top Man.

1.The story is the best in the NES Mega Man Games. With the other titles, you are given some cut scenes to tell what little story there is.In MM III, there are no cut scenes initially, so you don't really know the story. In fact, until you defeat BreakMan and the Dr Wily stage opens up (the Dr Wily levels is proceeded by a cut scene with Dr. Light and Mega Man, revealing Dr Wily is evil), you probably won't even now Dr Wily is supposed to be helping you.Granted, the game is longer than the other titles, so maybe they didn't have the memory to work with on extra cut scenes, given the NES's technical limitations.Still, given how it's the best story it's sad Capcom relied almost entirely on the game manual, which most NES players won't have access too, to advance the story.

2. Top Man.He's the most stupid robot master of the first three games, and his weapon is hard to figure out how to use.Once you do figure it out, its pretty useless with the sole exception of the last boss fight. The whole idea of "Top Man" as a robot master is pretty ridiculous, and is the first indication in the Classic Series that Capcom is beginning to run out of ideas for robot masters. This trend of borderline asinine robot masters would continue thru MM IV and V, and reach the absolute bottom of the barrel in MM VI (really, who the HELL thought of "Plant Man"?)A minor quibble, though, and don't let that distract you from all the game has to offer. It's a more important as an indicator of bad things to come for the series than really effecting this game's quality.Beginning cracks in the foundation, if you will.

Overall, I think this is easily one of Mega Man's best games, and is an essential purchase for NES and retro gamers, as well as Mega Man fans.As much as I like Mega Man II, I really think Mega Man III gives it a run for its money.

Though MMII is more important from a franchise historical pov as it was his first major hit game (MM was more of a sleeper hit), MM IIII takes everything about MMII and improves on it.This one definitely ups the ante, and the next three sequels simply can't compare it its genius or playability.

Batman: The Video Game Review

Batman: The Video GameBatman for the nes is quite possibly one of the best sidescrolling games based off of a comic book liscense and sheer quality of this game is not often found with old games that are usually rushed to coincide with a movie's release date. Thiat is not the case here, what we have is a fun and challenging game that is leaps and bounds better than most of the nes competition.
For a game that's over twenty years old, the graphics are very detailed with lots of nice background effects like buzz saws spinning on the ground and the joker's face appearing on the computer moniters. Another cool effect is the spinning gears in the clock tower which also happens to be one of the most epic last levels in 8 bit. The only real problem graphically is that many of the middle levels don't really match the Batman theme very well and appear to be lifted from another game entirely whcih is really less of a complaint and more of a curiosity.
The gameplay is pitch perfect and the Batman handles in such a natural way. From the wall jumping to switching your three weapons on the fly, everything is mapped out to perfection. Many times playing this, I forgot I was even holding a controller, it really is that intuitive.
Last but certainly not least, there is the music. Each level has it's own melody that ranges from sweeping thatrical action compositions to moody more subtle sound. One thing is for certain, few nes games can manage to utilize the hardware and make the sound as quality as this. This here is a soundtrack that easily compares to megaman or castlevania and in case your new to 8 bit, that's a huge compliment.
Anyway, if you have an old nes lying around, dust it off and play this little gem. Even if your not a fan of Batman but can appreciate some old school platforming, this is worth checking out. Sunsoft really did a tremendous job on this one and it's a shame more people don't include this in their listmania lists because I would pick this up over super mario 2 any day of the week.

This listing is for a Nes Video Game Version. Batman the Video game. Storyline: The citizens of GOTHAM CITY are busy planning the city's 200th Anniversary Festival, but there is not much to celebrate. Crime and violence rule the city. The only man who can free the city from THE JOKER'S evil clutches is the one and only - BATMAN! With your help, the CAPED CRUSADER can defeat THE JOKER and save the good people of GOTHAM CITY. BATMAN is armed with special weapons and acrobatic strength. He must destroy 15 different types of enemies and 5 bosses, while traveling through 5 stages. Finally, BATMAN comes face-to-face with THE JOKER! But who will prevail? It's up to you! --From the NES Batman instruction manual. Overview: Batman is based loosely on the Michael Keaton/Jack Nicholson movie. Batman is out to stop the Joker from terrorizing Gotham City. There are some cinema scenes between levels, that show the Batmobile driving around or confrontations with the Joker. The cut-scenes have nice graphics to look at. The in-game graphics are good, too. There are some quotes from the movie included, and much of the scenery came right from the movie, too, such as the Axis Chemical Plant, and Batman's final showdown against the Joker in the clock tower. The sounds were also reminiscent of the movie. The controls were a little tricky at first, but easy to use once you get used to them. The ability to make Batman jump off the walls was a really fun feature. This platformer based on the movie was definitely an exception to the rule that all games based on movies are crappy.

Donkey Kong Country 3 Review

Donkey Kong Country 3DKC3 was the last installment of Rareware's monkey series for the SNES, and was basically the game to get your child for Christmas of '96 if you didn't plan on tracking down the then-newly-released Nintendo 64.

Overall, DCK3 is a solid platformer game. It suffers in reviews because it lacks the originality of the first and the huge gameplay leaps of the second, but nothing about this title is remotely buggy or broken. Lots of levels and environments to traverse, and Rare included some interesting scenarios this time around that mix up the normal 'run and jump' gameplay (reversed controls, riding a rocket that needs constant refueling, dodge lightning, etc). There are memorable boss fights and an overworld filled with secrets that is explored through upgradable vehicles. There's even a family of bears scattered across the world that will help you if locate the right items for them.

Graphics are as sharp as the first two installments, and the music has a catchy, laid back tropical flavour (also seen in the brighter design of the enemies). The only nitpicks are the lack of story (Rare poked fun at this in the first two games, here they just don't try) and the character selection. It's odd that the series is called "Donkey Kong Country" and Donkey and Diddy are reduced to mere cameos here. Kiddy Kong brings back the heavy/light dynamic of the first game, but overall Dixie is still more useful and maneuverable. In the end though, this is a wonderful platformer that holds up well by today's standards. If you've still got an SNES, it's worth tracking down a copy.

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting Review

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper FightingStreet Fighter 2 was the first fighting game I owned on my SNES and is still one of my favorites.I skipped Champion Edition but when Turbo came out (the one with E Honda fighting Sagat on the cover) I knew it was good enough to buy again. This version features all the original 8 characters plus the 4 bosses, and the ability to fight with each character against himself, but does not include the 4 "new fighters" who are mostly cheap or ... (I really hate T Hawk). This is in my opinion the superior version of Street Fighter 2 on the best system. It seems like the SNES controller was made for this game, and the action so so smooth and beautiful.I had some fun playing this game against the computer but it really shines in versus mode.I cant tell you how many hours my brothers and I played this game but it became as much of a male bonding activity for us as anything.I think i still remember the code to jack up the turbo from the usual 3 stars to 10 (the matches are over in a matter of seconds) up down left right L Y R B or something like that.Man i really want to play this game again, hopefully my copy will arrive soon.It really is the most balanced and accurate fighting game of all time....Hadoken

Mega Man X Review

Mega Man XYeah I know, Super Nintendo Games are outdated but I still play them like hell.It was when I came across Mega Man X4 on my playstation that I remembered I owned the first one.
The Mega Man X series takes off from where the original series left off, sorta.A new character named Zero is introduced, and for those of you who were tired of Dr. Wiley can now face a new boss named Sigma.
The story is not very understandable at first, but I gave it five stars because of how fun it was, and because you can't say its too difficult or too hard.Eventhough the final boss is a little hard.
There are also "capsules" in this one. These power up the abilities that Mega Man can have.In this first installment, you can't expect the capsules to really give you much. (That is if you played X2-X5 first, but I played them all in order.)But the game is fun either way.I would recomend this to any Mega Man gamer.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES) Review

Castlevania II: Simon's QuestCastlevania II: Simon's Quest is my favorite Castlevania game of all time and always will be.

You are Simon Belmont with the classic whip, trying to defeat the one who wants to keep the world shrouded in darkness, Count Dracula. As Simon, you go to different towns talking to different townspeople, going to Churches to replenish life, many different mansions to gather the different parts of Dracula. You get many different kinds of whips, including my favorite, the Flame Whip. You also get the classic subweapons like holy water, knife, and cross.

The mansions that you go through have one of the best pieces of music ever in a Castlevania game.As well as the title screen where you input the password and the music Bloody Tears. This game also lets you level up but it's still the adventure game. It's more action and adventure than anything.

The classic Ferry Man is reason enough to own this game. The classic line "I'll take you to a good place, heh heh heh" was one of the coolest things in the game.Along with the lines "What a horrible night to have a curse" at night and "The morning light has vanquished the horrible night" at daylight.I'll never understand why so many people hate this game.I keep hearing "it's not like the original."Oh please!I must be the only person who doesn't compare games and just plays games as their own.Whoever cannot appreciate this masterpiece is just very closed minded.

Oh yeah, there are 3 different endings for this and this game is so much better than 99% of the games out there today.Graphics don't mean a thing, it's the amazing platforming and adventure elements that make this game a must own for Castlevania fans!

If you have never played Simon's Quest, play it!And if you've played it before, play it again! It's one of a kind!!"What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse!" Ha Ha Ha!

Donkey Kong Country 2 Review

Donkey Kong Country 2In the original Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong went on an adventure to try and get their mounds of bananas back, but this second adventure will be a bit different.
The Kongs' biggest villain, Kaptain K. Rool (a huge crocodile) has taken Donkey Kong as a hostage, so it's up to Diddy Kong and his girlfriend, Dixie Kong, to get him back.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is a lot like Donkey Kong Country, except that it's even better. It didn't seem possible at the time for a 16-bit game, but this one has even better graphics than the original, better sound effects and music, and it's even more fun. There are new, helpful characters such as Wrinkly Kong (who saves your game), new animal buddies such as a snake with major hangtime, an awesome spider who has really got the science of web-making down to an art, and Rambi the rhino and Enguarde the swordfish are back and better than ever!Oh yeah, Dixie Kong is new too.She can twirl her head full of hair, which enables her to fight the force of gravity for a little while.
But what really makes Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest even better than the original is that it has more levels, and a lot more variety. There are even more secrets, more gameplay elements, and bigger and meaner bosses. When it comes to gameplay, the levels are more interactive, and there are a lot more things to collect and do.Instead of just collecting tons of bananas and extra lives (there's still a bunch of those waiting to be collected), there are 75 Kremcoins, a specially hidden DK coin in each level, and more, that gives this game unbelievable replay value.
Just like Donkey Kong Country, Diddy's Kong Quest is a 1-2 player game. You can play by yourself, or you can play with a friend in either competition mode or team mode.
In my book, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is the best game in the series, and not only is it one of the best games for the Super Nintendo, and one of the best platformers, it's one of the best video games of all time.If you liked the original, or if you like action/adventure games that never get old, I recommend getting Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. You will NOT regret it!
