The Adventures of Batman and Robin Review

The Adventures of Batman and RobinKonami was on a roll in the early 90s with licensed games, and The Adventures of Batman and Robin is probably the company at its best. Lovely animation that captures the look and feel of the show's art deco style, and an amazing score that blends Shirley Walker's theme with newly composed music that fits like a glove. Best was the gameplay, that actually let you do all the things you expect Batman to do, without ever being cumbersome or gimmicky. And you even had to solve minor puzzles and utilize gadgets!

It's much easier to get licensed games right these days, though few companies still do. And though Ubisoft did an admirable job on Vengeance and Sin Tzu, this is still the definitive animated Batman game for me. If you love the animated series, your collection isn't complete without this game.

Indiana Jones: Greatest Adventures Review

Indiana Jones: Greatest AdventuresLet me start by saying I'm not very fond of 2D platform games at all. However, there are a select few that I do enjoy, and this is one of them.
Besides the fact that it's Indiana Jones, it's also a pretty fun and action-packed game. The music is excellent, which makes since because it was taken directly from Indiana Jones movies. The graphics are quite good for the SNES, and especially so for a side-scroller.Indy animates very well, and the control is quite good.
Like many other Lucasfilm games, this one is very challenging. However, I can accept that because the challenge comes from the game itself, not from poor control or design flaws. There are parts in this game that are not ridiculously hard, but they do require a whole lot of practice. You also have to use some strategy because many of the enemies are too tough for Indy to go toe-to-toe with, especially in the hardest difficulty. This game plays a lot like the Super Star Wars series for the SNES, except that Indy can't do that double-jump thing that you could in those games.
The story covers the span of all three Indiana Jones movies, in order:Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and Last Crusade. You can easily recognize many scenes from the movies that were implemented pretty accurately into the game, which is good.Too many times I've seen games based on movies make entire long, drawn-out stages out of one very minor event. There is no battery saving, but you can use passwords.
Overall, it's a great game, especially for a side-scroller.And, it's one of the few movie-based games that does not completely mess up in the translation.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Review

Castlevania II: Simon's QuestThis is not the pick-up-and-play whip-thrashing game I hoped for. The fact that each enemy needs to be hit 2-8 times makes it really hard when enemies are coming from both directions. There are also a lot of dead ends that make things confusing. (There are no in-game maps, either.) It has good graphics for being an earlier NES game. The music is also good. Another positive aspect is that there are many terrains and areas to explore. Overall, the game is just pretty good.

Double Dragon 5 Review

Double Dragon 5Take a trip far away from brawling on the streets to a cartoonish Street Fighter II rip off. This is a very poor game, first because it took you away from the past familiar faces of the Double Dragon games and replaced them with the characters from the cartoon series! Then, it puts you into a non random five person ladder tournament where you win a match and you continue working your way up to the Shadow Boss.

Battletoads In Battlemaniacs Review

Battletoads In BattlemaniacsBattletoads in Battlemaniacs was an extremely difficult game (ex: the Cool Boarders level, the Snake Board and the Rocket Rollercoaster level). Seriously, when I first started this game, a couple of parts were nearly impossible. What made it worse was that there was nothing you could do about it besides get better and let's face it, that should be the payoff from playing most video games right?
I will admit that once you got good at the difficult parts (usually after the bikes because it felt like it was impossible), you got really good at the rest of the game. There were still parts here and there but other than that you could deal.
You play as either the much quicker Rash or the brutally strong Pimple. Either/Or, Battletoads will challenge you in a lot of different ways from playing the levels to defeating enemies to thinking of your strategy for this game.
The bad thing about this game is that it requires way too many hours considering that it doesn't have that many levels and it's just a Fighting/Action/Adventure. I played this game for at least 3 weeks before I finally got the hang of it.
If you're looking for a challenge than this is it for you. If all you need is a good "whooping" fixx than this is unfortunately not for you on the basis that you have to dedicate a lot of game time to it. If you need a good fighting fixx than I would suggest any other great fighting title that is on SNES such as Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter II or Street Fighter Alpha (either is a great title). It's still a good game but if you don't have the committment for it, it's not worth it.

Contra Force Review

Contra ForceHey guys/gals/gamers,

Contra Force---I gotta admit, I didn't even know this game existed...Probably because it was released so close to the SNES release. In short, I had my SNES and hardly cared about new games for NES like many other kid-gamers out there.

Anyways, this game is your basic simultaneous player-tactical game, with original characters Mad Dog & Scorpion and 2 new other characters to play with.

I thought the game held up to the high standards set by Konami gamemakers, BUT, the main disappointment I hold with this game is that the gameplay SSSSLLLLOOOWWWSS...Almost to a screeching-halt sometimes and when it repeats, you get filled with rage and yet, excitement at the same time because you just want to play through the game, conquer it, so you can brag to all your friends that you just beat the most unknown Contra game in existence!!Overall, 4 stars.

Final Fight 2 Review

Final Fight 2In Final Fight 1, newly elected Mayor Mike Hagger took on the streets of Metro City. Now he's out to take on the world. Metro City's favorite wrestler-turned-mayor is back to save Guy's fiance and future fahter-in-law with the help of Guy's future sister-in-law Maki, and Carlos, an ex-con whom Hagger somehow helped out. Oddly enough, Guy makes no appearence except for a power-up figurine and a picture in the intro.
Now there is a two-player mode and two new characters on the scene. The Graphics are slightly better in some ways than SNES's first Final Fight, the music is a bit of a let-down, and Maki looks drop-dead gorgeous. That's about the gist of it.
Finally, let me just go on record: in case you have been wondering if anything was taken out of the U.S. version of Final Fight 2, the answer is yes. Like Final Fight and Final Fight Guy for the Super Famicom, the Japanese version Final Fight 2 included at least two female thugs.
