The Adventures of Batman and Robin Review

The Adventures of Batman and RobinKonami was on a roll in the early 90s with licensed games, and The Adventures of Batman and Robin is probably the company at its best. Lovely animation that captures the look and feel of the show's art deco style, and an amazing score that blends Shirley Walker's theme with newly composed music that fits like a glove. Best was the gameplay, that actually let you do all the things you expect Batman to do, without ever being cumbersome or gimmicky. And you even had to solve minor puzzles and utilize gadgets!

It's much easier to get licensed games right these days, though few companies still do. And though Ubisoft did an admirable job on Vengeance and Sin Tzu, this is still the definitive animated Batman game for me. If you love the animated series, your collection isn't complete without this game.

Axelay Review

AxelayAxelay is one of the best space shooters ever created, which is no surprise considering the publisher of the game; Konami; also crafted the exceptional Gradius and Cybernator. And like the latter games mentioned, it is one helluva difficult game to beat, and chances are you will never beat it.
WHAT THE GAME IS: A space shooter similar to Gradius, but it has no upgrades system. A mysterious alien force is eradicating the Illis Solar System, and solar system's fleet of ships is depleting, that's where you come in. With your ship called Axelay you must stop this force from destroying the solar system.
GRAPHICS: The graphics are better than Gradius III's, rather pretty, rather detailed, awesome ship and boss designs, cool level designs, and nice explosion effects, so this game is loaded with graphical juicyness.
MUSIC: It's good most of the time and manages to set the mood, but in some areas it's not that great. But that rarely occurs, so the music is good most of the time.
SOUND: Shooting, explosions, what did you expect?
GAMEPLAY: The controls are very finely tuned and work very nicely and fluidly, though I did notice some instances where I could not get my ship to go up in time to avoid an obstacle, so I did die a few times because the speed wasn't quite fast enough. This game is a one-hit-you're-dead game; like many of it's fellow shooters. However, this game is quite a lot of fun, even if you never beat it, but not as good as Gradius.
OVERALL: Axelay is a highly polished space shooter that will make a standout title in your Super Nintendo collection if you purchase this wonderful game, along with Starfox, Hyperzone, Cybernator, R-Type, and Gradius III to add to your SNES collection because they are well-worth the investment. Just don't buy Vortex, it will only give you pain.
THE GOOD: Highly polished shooter gameplay, good graphics, good music, and lots of challenge.
THE BAD: Challenge will be too much for some, the game isn't as good as Gradius III.

Wario's Woods Review

Wario's WoodsI was real disappointed with this game. I thought it was a story mode game with Wario "himself". Then I realized it has NOTHING to do with Wario At All!!! NOT COOL!!!

Samurai Shodown Review

Samurai ShodownSamurai Showdown on SNES was better than the SEGA version. Why? Because unfortunately, the SEGA version was a little choppy and a lot of the sounds were taken out. Also, the fat "ninja" who wore pink, Earthquake, was also left out. \
Granted yes the SNES version made no references at all to "killing" your opponent in the pre-match intros but who really paid attention to those? Thought not.
Anyway, the gameplay is pretty basic on here. Hack and slash, occasionally use a special move and cut your opponent in 2. Like a lot of the fighting games of its time and now, it's replay value is somewhat low depending on how into the series you are.
Even so, Samurai Showdown was a good game. Give it a shot. Maybe see if a friend has it or if you still can, rent it.

Final Fight Guy Review

Final Fight GuyAfter Final Fight made it's Super Nintendo debut in or around 1990, Nintendo said in one of it's players' guides that the Super NES version included everything that made the arcade title a winner. Well, that was a matter of opinion, as Guy, the two-player mode, and a stage from the arcade game were removed, possibly due to memory constraints. Roxy, Poison, and alcoholic beverages were also removed from the American version. This, in addition to descrete graphical problems, caused the SNES title to sink while the SEGA CD version was much better recieved.
Former pro-wrestler and newly elected mayor Mike Hagger recieves a threat from a gang called The Mad Gears when he refuses to be corrupted and take bribes (Like that would ever happen in real life!) in exchange for letting them run rampant: They kidnap his daughter, Jessica. What the Mad Gears don't know is that Hagger doesn't take kindly to threats, and Jessica's boyfriend, Cody, isn't too pleased either. In this version, Cody's away in Japan so Guy joins Hagger in the streets to fight the Mad Gears and get Jessica back safely.
This is essentially another version of Final Fight for the SNES. While there are a few improvements graphically, the only major difference is that you get to play as Guy instead of Cody.
It's funny how this story coincides with Jessie "The Body" Ventura's run and victory for governor of Minnesota. This story was written prior to Jesse's run.

Double Dragon 5 Review

Double Dragon 5Take a trip far away from brawling on the streets to a cartoonish Street Fighter II rip off. This is a very poor game, first because it took you away from the past familiar faces of the Double Dragon games and replaced them with the characters from the cartoon series! Then, it puts you into a non random five person ladder tournament where you win a match and you continue working your way up to the Shadow Boss.

Wing Commander Review

Wing CommanderWing Commander is a space flight simulator. The premise of the game is basically that the human race is waging war against an alien cat like race called the Kilrathi. You play a rookie pilot who by the end of the game (hopefully) has made a name for himself. While much of the game is spent completing missions, inbetween those missions you can spend time talking to your fellow teammates in the lounge area, checking out the kill board or getting a mission debriefing. The missions themselves vary from destroying all targets while traveling from one nav point to another to escorting friendlies. The mission view is that from the cockpit. Depending on what ship you are flying the view is different as are the weapons and shields available. You can also talk to your wingmen or taunt the enemy with certain commands. The controls take a bit of getting used to but after an hour or two you should feel right at home. The graphics and music are not that great unfortunately. The graphics are dark and not very detailed and the music is not that memorable. What will keep you playing though is the storyline and the challange. How you perform determines how the war goes. Fail too many objectives and your carrier, the Tiger Claw will be attacked. Complete the objectives and you'll take the war to the Kilrathi! Overall, the game is a lot of fun and is an excellent start to a great series.
