A Boy and His Blob Review

A Boy and His BlobThe Wii has become the welcoming home for a series of wonderful 2D games lately, from Muramasa: The Demon Blade to World of Goo, and the forthcoming New Super Mario Bros Wii (worst...title...ever).Add to this list A Boy and His Blob, which is an ultra-charming reimagining of the NES "classic."I say "classic" because, like Battletoads, it's one of those old games that people remember fondly until they try to play it again and realize just how crazy hard the game is.

The Wii version is much easier than the NES game in some ways, although it offers up plenty of challenge in its own right. The boy now has an unlimited number of jellybeans to feed the blob, which means that you can now focus on the puzzle at hand rather than worrying about rationing and backtracking.Further, there really is no backtracking anymore since the Wii version does not contain an open world; the game is split up into self-contained levels in four unique worlds. There is a final goal to reach in each level, but there are also three treasure chests hidden in each one.Get all three chests and you open a whole new challenge level at your treehouse "hub."Beat the challenge and you're rewarded with behind-the-scenes footage of the game in progress, including sketches and artwork. It's a great system that's easy to understand and really boosts the replay value of the game.

The game is beautiful. It's hand-drawn and the level of detail is astounding, in a subtle kind of way.Stop for a while and appreciate the light swaying of trees in the background, the animated frogs jumping at your feet, and the very nice lighting effects, especially during the night stages.Like a Miyazaki film, you can feel the love that was poured into this game.Heck, the animators even went so far as to include a feature where you can hug and scold your blob, for no other reason than "because you can."These elements also greatly add to the charm. The music is also subtle but quite nice.Chances are you won't be humming the tunes later, but the music fits well with the visual style.

Controls are tight, for the most part. Some sticky points can come in when you're trying to direct the trajectory of your jellybeans, which requires a very light touch on the analog stick. Also, flying can feel too loose and the screen gets kind of jerky, which leads to quite a few accidental deaths.Luckily, there are a wealth of save points within each level so you're never sent too far back after a death. My biggest beef with the game is that only one player can save a game at a time.My fiancee and I are both big puzzle fans and it's annoying that we can't each have our own game going at the same time.

Long story short, buy this game if you're a fan of puzzle games. The pace is not fast, but you'll love the animation and the challenging levels that build in the latter half of the game.Support 2D games, let the developers know that there's still a market out there for them.

Shadowrun Review

ShadowrunRating--92 out of 100--

A niche title in every sense of the word, Shadowrun received mild praise when it was first released for the Super Nintendo years ago. However, as the game is based on a role playing game, much like Dungeons and Dragons, it has built a strong fan base over the years. Those who can remember playing this game, can easily be brought back to its seamless world which some might overlook and just brush off to the side. The idea for the Matrix movies obvioussly extends from this Role Playing series as the game centers around your character, who wakes up after seemingly being dead, to continue his search for vengeance against the ones who killed him.
The gameplay is very straightforward in termsof shooting, as when you press the fire button a crosshair appears on the screen and allows you to shoot anywhere in the range of the screen. As you progress forward into the game your character builds up Karma points that can then be used to raise his strength, health, weapon, or magic skills. While the shooting is a bit harrdto get used to, and the game offers a steep learning curve, as the difficulty in this game is pretty tough, the storyline itself easily makes up for it and drives you toward the end of the game as you search for the awnsers leading to your demise.
As you fight your way through the game you will get new weapons, get new skills that allow you to hack into the matrix better, as well as recruit other shadowrunners as well to help you along your quest. You fight several bosses along the way, and the game never fails to impress with its startling revelations hour after hour. Overall an excellent game, with well done music as well, although some of the songs ae repeated numerous times (this was SNES you know), but this does not take away from this fine gaming experience. But yeah what the hell did happen to part 2 though?

Raid 2020 Review

Raid 2020The quote I said is not by me I saw it on youtube. Anyway raid 2020 well first off I have to say is that the front cover of this game is really cool a futureistc cop standing in front of dead robots in his wake just a big spin to people thinking that this game might be good. Ok now to the plot the charcter you play as is named officer shadow and it is up to him to stop a drug kingpin named Pitbull sounds promising enough. Well the controls are very werid you can move left and right just fine but when he moves up and down he moves at a 45 degree angle. Next is the enemy run down you have drug dealers who aren't that hard to beat and seagulls craping on you. Yes seagull crap can kill you in this god awful game. In my opinion just stay away from this game and save all your money, all five bucks.

Actraiser II Review

Actraiser IIIf you loved Actraiser, you should like Actraiser II.Don't get me wrong it is a terrific game in its own right, but Actraiser was a very hard act to follow. If you never played Actraiser it was really two games in one. There was the simulation part (ala Populous and/or SimCity), and the action part (a side scrolling hack and slash type game). You had to save the citys that you built from different monsters that threatened them. Both play aspects made for a unique game I haven't seen the likes of since.
Actraiser II kept the action part of the game and made it so much better, but ditched the simulation part.I remember people at the time this game came out were very upset about this and I still am when I think about it.Actraiser II could have been such a better game if they kept the simulation.
OK, now that I have gone on and on about what the game doesn't have, let me tell you about what it does have:You start the game with 20 HP, 3 sources of magic, and your full assortment of every type of magic to begin with, but nothing changes with your character throughout the entire game: sword, armor, etc.the only thing you can build up are sources of magic, and those reset whenever you leave the monster lair.I'll be honest this game is hard, even on the easy level. The hard level is almost impossible (you could wear out your sword swinging button). The game is worth it, with a nice story line, beautifully rendered backgrounds, and great music, this is a very good side scrolling hack and slash game.Your character (the Master) looks very cool, complete with a sword, a shield (that can deflect some attacks), and wings.Yes you can fly, well I would call it gliding down slowly.
In a game that doesn't give you any power ups or anything new to change your character, what is the motivation for playing it?The sheer sense of accomplishment of being that skilled at a game and being able to say you beat it on normal mode (which I have).Your skill must keep increasing as you play.Whenever I pick it up I cannot really get past the first level without a few tries. After getting back into it it gets much easier though.
Some secret extras that are cool about this game, like entering the code (in the password screen):
Xxxx Yyyy Zzzz
This brings you to a fight with Tarzana from the original Actraiser using your new Actraiser II character.
I would recomend this game to anyone who is very patient and who can master a game beyond anyone else they know.

Indiana Jones: Greatest Adventures Review

Indiana Jones: Greatest AdventuresLet me start by saying I'm not very fond of 2D platform games at all. However, there are a select few that I do enjoy, and this is one of them.
Besides the fact that it's Indiana Jones, it's also a pretty fun and action-packed game. The music is excellent, which makes since because it was taken directly from Indiana Jones movies. The graphics are quite good for the SNES, and especially so for a side-scroller.Indy animates very well, and the control is quite good.
Like many other Lucasfilm games, this one is very challenging. However, I can accept that because the challenge comes from the game itself, not from poor control or design flaws. There are parts in this game that are not ridiculously hard, but they do require a whole lot of practice. You also have to use some strategy because many of the enemies are too tough for Indy to go toe-to-toe with, especially in the hardest difficulty. This game plays a lot like the Super Star Wars series for the SNES, except that Indy can't do that double-jump thing that you could in those games.
The story covers the span of all three Indiana Jones movies, in order:Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and Last Crusade. You can easily recognize many scenes from the movies that were implemented pretty accurately into the game, which is good.Too many times I've seen games based on movies make entire long, drawn-out stages out of one very minor event. There is no battery saving, but you can use passwords.
Overall, it's a great game, especially for a side-scroller.And, it's one of the few movie-based games that does not completely mess up in the translation.
