A Boy and His Blob Review

A Boy and His BlobThe Wii has become the welcoming home for a series of wonderful 2D games lately, from Muramasa: The Demon Blade to World of Goo, and the forthcoming New Super Mario Bros Wii (worst...title...ever).Add to this list A Boy and His Blob, which is an ultra-charming reimagining of the NES "classic."I say "classic" because, like Battletoads, it's one of those old games that people remember fondly until they try to play it again and realize just how crazy hard the game is.

The Wii version is much easier than the NES game in some ways, although it offers up plenty of challenge in its own right. The boy now has an unlimited number of jellybeans to feed the blob, which means that you can now focus on the puzzle at hand rather than worrying about rationing and backtracking.Further, there really is no backtracking anymore since the Wii version does not contain an open world; the game is split up into self-contained levels in four unique worlds. There is a final goal to reach in each level, but there are also three treasure chests hidden in each one.Get all three chests and you open a whole new challenge level at your treehouse "hub."Beat the challenge and you're rewarded with behind-the-scenes footage of the game in progress, including sketches and artwork. It's a great system that's easy to understand and really boosts the replay value of the game.

The game is beautiful. It's hand-drawn and the level of detail is astounding, in a subtle kind of way.Stop for a while and appreciate the light swaying of trees in the background, the animated frogs jumping at your feet, and the very nice lighting effects, especially during the night stages.Like a Miyazaki film, you can feel the love that was poured into this game.Heck, the animators even went so far as to include a feature where you can hug and scold your blob, for no other reason than "because you can."These elements also greatly add to the charm. The music is also subtle but quite nice.Chances are you won't be humming the tunes later, but the music fits well with the visual style.

Controls are tight, for the most part. Some sticky points can come in when you're trying to direct the trajectory of your jellybeans, which requires a very light touch on the analog stick. Also, flying can feel too loose and the screen gets kind of jerky, which leads to quite a few accidental deaths.Luckily, there are a wealth of save points within each level so you're never sent too far back after a death. My biggest beef with the game is that only one player can save a game at a time.My fiancee and I are both big puzzle fans and it's annoying that we can't each have our own game going at the same time.

Long story short, buy this game if you're a fan of puzzle games. The pace is not fast, but you'll love the animation and the challenging levels that build in the latter half of the game.Support 2D games, let the developers know that there's still a market out there for them.

Breath of Fire II Review

Breath of Fire IIBreath of Fire is another RPG classic series. It was Capcom's experiment into the genre as Squaresoft ventured on with their Final Fantasy series. When I first heard of Breath of Fire, I played the first game for Super NES and liked it.Breath of Fire 3 just wasn't all that great to me, and while it wasn't a terrible game, it didn't have the classic feel the first game had.My friend Karl (reviewer Karl Jordan, Kudos to him) enlightened me by showing me Breath of Fire 2.
And boy have I been enlightened. After playing hours on end of this game, BREATH OF FIRE 3 IS VASTLY OVERRATED.This game has all the classic elements an RPG needs!
THE GOOD
A wonderful storyline involving a fake religion and Ryu's "misplaced childhood" is one of the best written RPG stories. This same storyline has been used countless times, even within the series, but no other game pulled it off as well as this. The characters are awesome and I think this has the best Ryu and Nina out of all the Breath of Fire games. The graphics are reasonably good, considering it's an early SNES game. The music?Very good, indeed. There are times when it sounds like Final Fantasy and at others, Mega Man X!Simply great music. Not perfect, why carp? The battle system is also good in the fact that you can do different abilities (examples: Nina can use "Will" to revive her MP, Sten uses "RiP" to play dead, etc. etc.).For some odd reason, this hasn't carried over into the other games in the series afterwards.
THE BAD
The only bad things I can say about the game are these:
1) Ryu's dragon transformation is really lackluster here, and it's been improved upon in later BoF entries.
2) The translation isn't all that great.
OVERALL
CLASSIC.Definitely a fine RPG if I ever saw one.I'm not sure why BoF 3 is considered the best by many; then again, in this day and age, hardly anyone ever cares for the old games.BoF 3, in my opinion, is a decent game overall but lacks the great qualities that this game possesses. It's a shame that this game goes unnoticed in today's gamers.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 Review

Kirby's Dream Land 3this was the first kirby game I have ever played! and now I own lots! but anyway, as my first kirby game this is my first review. as a hard core kirby fan I have to say that I like the scribble graphics and it's fun and challenging to get the true ending by collecting all the heart stars. but however it only gets four stars because the 2 player mode is lame because the second player has no freedom, as if it goes offscreen it goes back to player 1, and the difficulty to get all 30 heart stars is a factor. but the number one reason why is because it gets monotonous the third or fourth replay. however, it is a great first kirby game although I would suggest kirby's dream land instead. all in all, this game is money well spent.

Harvest Moon Review

Harvest MoonThe Game-10/10 Harvest moon, a farming simulation game, is a very unique game with a good story line to back it up. Being 110% original, this game contains more secrets and things to explore than any other game I have played. With the exception of being a highly difficult game, this makes playing all the more addicting. As you are playing, there are goals you feel you must meet, but onlyif you are a serious player. Natsume has created a flawless entertainment game;yet, the company is often misunderstood. All the people I have ley play this game feel they must go out and buy one of their own; what can I say, I would do the same thing.

Difficulty-10/10 Although some people think this game is for kids, I am sure a kid would never be able to fathom the world of harvest moon. The game requires a large quantity of work and effort to attain the simplist of things, such as photos for your album and falling in love with another character. Aside from eing difficult, the game will force you into eing responsible foe animals and your social life. Secrets, photos, and being friends with every person in the game requires patience and skill.

Music/Sound-10/10 Harvest Moon has different toons for each of the four seasons you play within the year. To my suprise, these repeting songs don't seem to become annoying because you are so focused on the game. As well as good sounds, the game contains many songs for festivals and events. An example of a well done sound effect is when you are nearing the end of a horse race and the crowd begins to cheer, or even the church bells that ring when you are getting married. These are all classic toons that help the game be original.

Secrets-10/10 This game totals over 100 secrets that are not facile to achieve. To acquire every power berry, requires great skill and curiosity to explore. I have played over 200 hours on this game and I never cease to discover something I have never seen before, such as a social event or more secrets. Anyone who thinks they have found all there is to find should think twice before making that statement final.

Overall-10/10 Harvest Moon is the second best game I have ever played because it prooves to be so difficult;yet, the Star Ocean series requires more effort and skill because the bosses are etherial and just about impossible to beat. Because Harvest Moon uses all the old fashioned farming tools and storylines, this is a game worth playing forever. Pricing at $40 to $50 in your local gamecrazy prooves that it is a rare antique that is hard to find. This game will never get boring due to all that is has to offer, and I asvise others to play this game to find out for themselves.

Earthbound Review

Earthboundi still remember the first time i played this game. it was given to me by and old neighbor of mine as a gift back in 1995. ever since then i think ive beaten and restarted this game over a hundred times. to me this game never gets old. the only reason i still have my snes is just for this game. i highly recomend this game to anyone that likes RPGs. it is so simple that anyone can pick it up but the storyline is so deep that it actually makes you care deeply about these 16-bit sprites on the screen.

the music is so catchy, each city has its own theme and almost each enemy has his own music. the music for this is perfect for the tone of the game.

the graphix are sufficient. sprite detail is great. the only complaint anyone has (not me) is the battle graphics are just a box with your name on it fighting a picture of the enemy. very simple but youlle actually be suprised how well it works.

replayability is by far the best aspect of the game. there is so much to do and its so fun to complete all the tasks.

it is a little bit hard to figure out what to do next though, even the original game came with the players guide. if you dont have a guide you can easily download a guide online for free.

Journey to Silius Review

Journey to SiliusA great game, and a great challenge. As previously stated, it was supposed to be a Terminator game. The liscence was apparently lost after the final boss was programmed.Still a cool game. One of the most challenging games to come out for the NES.There are VERY few health power ups, so you've really got to avoid hits and make every unit of energy count.I just wish more people knew about this one, so bragging rights for beating it would hold more weight.

Ninja Gaiden III Review

Ninja Gaiden IIINinja gaiden III it's top 5 stars, back in 1992 i had to be the biggestninja gaiden freak there was, i had played and beat all 3 parts in 1 summer, ninja gaiden one is a breeze that i can beat in 30 minutes tops, ninja gaiden II they put alot of work in the music in that game in my opinion capturing the "thunder and savvy of tecmo music!" as weird as that may sound, but it's pure entertainment ,splitting ryu's body into 3 parts helps you through that, and fighting jaquio in a rematch but to a failing attempt, ninja gaiden III is not so easy with badder enemies after ryu, and has betrayal, they didn't put as much effort into the music as the second part but is was enough tp keep people interested, with ryu's power sword and vaccum blades etc, jaquio and ashtar are not there but badder enemies are, next to mega man, contra or even mario bros. the best game ever...

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen Review

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queenthis game was the very first ever of its type.think of it like an on-line rpg, with 20 people(each controling a group) all under your command.By broadening the focus of the game so that individual battles are mostly pretty minor, you get to focus more on character developement and strategy. great game
