Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Review

Castlevania II: Simon's QuestThis is not the pick-up-and-play whip-thrashing game I hoped for. The fact that each enemy needs to be hit 2-8 times makes it really hard when enemies are coming from both directions. There are also a lot of dead ends that make things confusing. (There are no in-game maps, either.) It has good graphics for being an earlier NES game. The music is also good. Another positive aspect is that there are many terrains and areas to explore. Overall, the game is just pretty good.

River City Ransom (NES) Review

River City RansomRiver City Ransom is the best NES game ever made, and that's saying a lot! This game has it all: action, violence, humor, RPG elements, replayability...the list just keeps going.Yes, the story is cheesy, and you have to wonder where all the cops are during the street fights, but that just adds to the classic dimension of this game.IF you like chubby teenage boys beating the crap out of each other with pipes and chains, then this is the game for you.The game is best played in the two player mode. And if you don't like the person you're playing with, you can beat them up and take their money.Fun huh! Be sure to check out all the stores. You could play this game for months and still not buy everything. It's amazing for an NES game. You can throw tires and then ride them, you can throw weapons...the play control is incredible when compared with other fighting games like Double Dragon, which is a good game, but not even in the same league with RCR.Whenever you're angry at the world, just turn this game on and beat on some gang members. You're sure to feel better.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesThe original Ninja Turtles was a lot different from its sequels; instead of the arcade action, this was a platform sidescrolling adventure which occassionally transitioned to overhead map views and cruising around in the turtle van.
THE GOOD
It was fun, of course. You got to change your turtle within a mission and select different weapons that you collect along the way.The music was good, especially when considering the time period of this game. Some might this as a burden, but I enjoyed its difficulty. As I've said in my other reviews, this game was made back in the day when NES games kicked your [...] and forced you to defeat it on its own terms. When comparing this to the much easier 2,3, and 4, I enjoyed this much better (but I still like the others for their multiplayer ability, don't get me wrong).
THE BAD
While this was difficult and I enjoyed it, there were some things that do place a detriment to the game. The turtles are uneven in their abilities.Leonardo has a long reach, but is the weakest of the four (why do that to my favorite turtle?!).Mikey is not much better than Leo in terms of weapon power.Raphael is good for his fast attacks despite his up-close range.Donatello pretty much defeats all of them because he is the strongest AND has the farthest reach. You could beat this game on him alone.
If you're a fan of the Old School NES, you will no doubt enjoy this game (or perhaps just a fan of the Ninja Turtles in general). It's a good platform game that is unique in comparison to the sequels that followed.Today's gamers will no doubt turn away from it because of its dated graphics (which aren't bad, especially considering the time period) and its more difficult levels.
"It's too hard!"
Well, I suggest you try harder. This game doesn't spoonfeed you; it's a difficult adventure. So strap on some turtle shells (and even a game genie if you want it) and some weaponry and engage yourself in a classic game.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Review

Castlevania III: Dracula's CurseThis is a platform fighter game that incorporates some from Castlevania I, in that you have a solid quest, and Castlevania II where you have a choice as to the leg of the path you chose. This game has amazing new features, characters and weapons! You start the game as Trevor Belmnot, vampire hunter who's goal as usual is to kill Dracula. On your quest, you meet up with Sypha, who is a magician with powerful and awesome spells. Grant who is a theif and who may stick to walls and ceilings... it is difficult to get him to stick though. Alucard who is Dracula's son, he doesn't offer much other than turning into a bat. Along the quest there are several new and old monsters, bosses and challenges. This game is very challenging, so much so that it does get annoying, and the game has probably the greatest graphics ever for Nintendo!

Mega Man 3 Review

Mega Man 3MEGA MAN II is generally considered the breakout game for our titular blue bomber, and for good reason: it fixed all the problems found in the first Mega Man, and was one of the best games for the NES.Truthfully, it's the only Mega Man game I had for the NES in the late 1980s and early 1990s, though I played the first game quite a bit as well.As good as MMII is, is it really the best Mega Man game ever, let alone in the classic series?

If it weren't for MEGA MAN III, I would unequivocally say yes.MEGA MAN III is easily as good as MMII, and opens up the Mega Man gameplay, expanding Mega Man's repertoire.

Major new features introduced in MMIII
*Slide - Mega Man can now slide, creating new possibilities for level design.
*You can now carry up to 9 energy tanks, rather than 4 like MM II
*Due to the introduction of the Doc Robot levels, this is by far the longest of the six NES MM games.
*Rush, Mega Man's iconic robotic dog, makes his debut here.
*Proto Man, masquarding as the mysterious Break Man, debuts as well.
*Another notable feature is this is the first game that has accurate cover art on how Mega Man actually appears in the game.MM is notoriously bad cover art, and MMII's cover art has MM holding a gun rather than his arm cannon. Not bad but not great. This is definitely an improvement over the last two.

MMIII actually has the best story of all six NES titles.Dr. Light and Dr. Wily are working together to build a giant peace keeping robot named Gamma. However, the eight robot masters that the two designed to help keep the peace go beserk, stealing 8 power crystals. The two scientists quickly call Mega Man into action.

Mega Man must defeat the eight bosses to regain the crystals. This set of levels is probably my favorite in any Mega Man game. They're all very well designed, and just flat-out fun to play. The Shadow Man level and Snake Man level are both great.

But wait, there's more. After defeating the eight robot masters, four new levels open up (they are remixed or altnerate versions of four regular levels), and robot masters named Doc Robots are masters of these levels. There are two Doc Robots per level. While all the Doc Robots look the same, they are actually programmed to act like one of the robot masters in MEGA MAN II.When you reach the Doc Robot's lair, the sprite of one of the Mega Man II bosses descends from top of the screen down into Doc Robot, like the spirit of that perspective boss is inhabiting or animating the Doc Robot's body.

Once you defeat the 8 Doc Robot masters, another level opens in the center of the portrait page, entitled BreakMan.It is a simple one screen level, where you must fight ProtoMan.Ultimately, it is revealed Proto Man is Mega Man's brother, and built before Mega Man.Proto Man, who has been kept ambigious throughout the game, has been helping train Mega Man with each fight.

After you finish your training level with Proto Man, you now learn that Dr. Wily has stolen the power crystals Mega Man recovered, and has holed up in a new Skull Castle, intent on activating Gamma and reprogramming him to begin yet another attempt to take over the world via thru the campaign of bloody massacre or pogrom.

Wily's Castle features several cameos or references to the first two games.
*The famous Rock Monster (AKA the Yellow Devil) from the first game makes a return appearance, with a newly designed appearance.
*Gamma looks a lot like Gutsman (who, of all the villains in Mega Man, makes the most cameo appearances in other games, his likeness also appears as a Wiley Castle Boss in MMII).
*The boss guarding the transporter room in the fourth portion of Dr Wily throws rocks like Gutsman.
*Mega Man must fight his clone, just like the original MEGA MAN.Thistime around, there are three platforms, each with a separate clone. One clone is real, the other two holograms, and the real clone's location constantly changes between the three platforms.

The Dr. Wily stages are fun, although the last incarnation of Dr. Wily is the weakest of all six NES Wily bosses. With a single top spin, you destroy him.

The only two negative things I have to say about the game is this: the story is not really explained, and the inclusion of Top Man.

1.The story is the best in the NES Mega Man Games. With the other titles, you are given some cut scenes to tell what little story there is.In MM III, there are no cut scenes initially, so you don't really know the story. In fact, until you defeat BreakMan and the Dr Wily stage opens up (the Dr Wily levels is proceeded by a cut scene with Dr. Light and Mega Man, revealing Dr Wily is evil), you probably won't even now Dr Wily is supposed to be helping you.Granted, the game is longer than the other titles, so maybe they didn't have the memory to work with on extra cut scenes, given the NES's technical limitations.Still, given how it's the best story it's sad Capcom relied almost entirely on the game manual, which most NES players won't have access too, to advance the story.

2. Top Man.He's the most stupid robot master of the first three games, and his weapon is hard to figure out how to use.Once you do figure it out, its pretty useless with the sole exception of the last boss fight. The whole idea of "Top Man" as a robot master is pretty ridiculous, and is the first indication in the Classic Series that Capcom is beginning to run out of ideas for robot masters. This trend of borderline asinine robot masters would continue thru MM IV and V, and reach the absolute bottom of the barrel in MM VI (really, who the HELL thought of "Plant Man"?)A minor quibble, though, and don't let that distract you from all the game has to offer. It's a more important as an indicator of bad things to come for the series than really effecting this game's quality.Beginning cracks in the foundation, if you will.

Overall, I think this is easily one of Mega Man's best games, and is an essential purchase for NES and retro gamers, as well as Mega Man fans.As much as I like Mega Man II, I really think Mega Man III gives it a run for its money.

Though MMII is more important from a franchise historical pov as it was his first major hit game (MM was more of a sleeper hit), MM IIII takes everything about MMII and improves on it.This one definitely ups the ante, and the next three sequels simply can't compare it its genius or playability.

Maniac MansionManiac Mansion is one of the most well thought out, clever, funny inventive games ever released and irony has it on the old NES. F-Zero Review

F-ZeroF-Zero was the original mode-7 racing game for the Super Nintendo. Scrolling background layers give the illusion of a 3D track, and you pilot one of four vehicles across multiple courses.

The game's lost quite a bit of shine, mostly because Super Mario Kart took everything Nintendo learned from this experience and improved on it, including adding a two-player mode. Pop this cartridge in and it's easy to see how this game was revolutionary back in the day, but now the backgrounds are bland and flat and the races seem rather slow. The trademark F-zero music is still intact, however.

A decent game for collection purposes, but the GBA versions feel superior, not to mention the 3D NIntendo 64 and Gamecube sequels.

NES Ghosts 'N Goblins Review

NES Ghosts 'N GoblinsLet me say this, THIS GAME IS BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT GAMES ever made.I will also say that it is not one everyone will enjoy.I have incredible fun playing this game as well as its SNES version. Here is my review.

The story is that you are the valiant Sir Arthur, not sure if there is supposed to be a relation to King Arthur but my guess is no.Your girlfriend and you are on a picnic in the graveyard (as seen in the opening scene) dont ask why you picnic in the graveyard but you do.Then a big red monster with wings, Satan i guess, appears and kidnaps her.You must follow the beast through the land and save your girlfriend.

Let me say some of the negatives of the game. The biggest problem is that YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE GAME TWICE IN ORDER TO WIN.Yes that is true, you go through the game and when you get to the final boss you are sent back to the beginning to obtain an item you need to defeat Satan. There is no way to get the item on your first playthrough and the develpers thought this would be a wonderful idea, well since the game is so darn difficult it is not fun at all when it happens to you, especially when you think your almost done. Also you die in two hits and many areas have respawning monsters and difficult traps.Getting extra lives is rare and like I said before the game is incredibly hard!

Positives are that the gameplay is great.Your standard weapon is like a lance or sword that you throw, you get powerups to your weapon. Also the games level designs are rather fun and the levels are quite different for one another, at least for the NES days. The game's difficulty also is not the kind that comes from being frustrating, its a lot like how difficult Mario Brother games are, you will die and die constantly but you will continue playing as you pull your hair out.You also feel some accomplishment when you pass a level or boss.

Overall I feel this game is great for the hard core gamer or someone who enjoys a real challenge. Many casual gamers will be turned away by its difficulty but I feel it is a very fun game worth owning.

Friday the 13th Review

Friday the 13thThis game is truly amazing for NES, even though it is very old and for NES it is still pretty cool. You can be one of many teenager (they look like kids though) to battle the great Jason and look for the missing children. Jaosn is very hard to kill, that the only reason I gave this a 4 instead of 5, he is creepy though, you find him in houses. Its a big level, with many houses, if you lucky you will go into the house with Jason and fight him , bu he allways comes back of course! I love the music, it is actually creepy, it sounds like something from a Friday the 13th movie,I love it! This is a game that will haunt you for hours!

Kirby's Adventure Review

Kirby's AdventureYes, children, there used to be an 8 bit system called the NES. By the time Kirby was released on it, the SNES had taken over, with its superior graphics and sound.

But Kirby is a labour of love. Rather than make some piece of trash as the last great NES game, the makers polished it and polished it until you can almost see your face in it. The graphics stretch the 8 bit format to its absolute limit. This is the aesthetic equivalent of painting the Lord's Prayer on a grain of rice - the beauty is that of working WITHIN the limitations. Kirby himself is a beautiful vibrant pink, the worlds he passes through are delicious lime greens, ice blues, chocolate browns - the rich colours do not attempt to emulate 16 bit, but instead try to make 8 bit as beautiful as possible

Likewise the sound. Kirby makes the cutest "ooh" and squeaking noises; the music is well-composed and works wonderfully within the confines of an 8 bit synthesiser.

The gameplay is also polished, with an intuitive beauty to the controls. It's a finger dance to play this game - an experience of control and aesthetics that few games can match.

Farewell, little NES! Maybe you will be reincarnated in a future century...

Dr. Mario Review

Dr. MarioThis is an excellent game and if you were looking for a version of Tetris that was more challenging, than DR MARIO was for you. This game is sometimes very tricky, but it's very fun as well.
The object of the game is to match the colors of the pills that are being dropped onto the viruses below and by doing this killing them off, one by one. I really don't carw what anyone says but this game rocked. In Tetris, the challenge was to clear lines that are at the bottom and they build up. In DR MARIO you had to play the boards as they were giben and in most cases, the viruses were all over the place so placing some of the pills in the wrong place could come back to haunt you.
Like I said, the challenge to this game is great and it never got tired. Really check out DR MARIO it's worth it!
