Contra Force Review

Contra ForceHey guys/gals/gamers,

Contra Force---I gotta admit, I didn't even know this game existed...Probably because it was released so close to the SNES release. In short, I had my SNES and hardly cared about new games for NES like many other kid-gamers out there.

Anyways, this game is your basic simultaneous player-tactical game, with original characters Mad Dog & Scorpion and 2 new other characters to play with.

I thought the game held up to the high standards set by Konami gamemakers, BUT, the main disappointment I hold with this game is that the gameplay SSSSLLLLOOOWWWSS...Almost to a screeching-halt sometimes and when it repeats, you get filled with rage and yet, excitement at the same time because you just want to play through the game, conquer it, so you can brag to all your friends that you just beat the most unknown Contra game in existence!!Overall, 4 stars.

Solomon's Key Review

Solomon's KeyWhat a great game! You play as Dana a sorcerer sent to rid Solomon's mine of evil monsters. The game-play consists of making and destroying blocks to navigate the room in order to collect the key that opens the door, which ends the stage. The tricky part is each room is full of various monsters, which all can kill you in one hit. The game plays as an action platformer with puzzle elements. It not only requires you to solve abstract platform puzzles but to use quick reflexes to dodge the various enemies. This is a very difficult game, but one of my all time favorites. You only get one continue, but by holding A + B and pressing UP at the game over screen you can bypass this.

Operation Wolf Review

Operation WolfOperation Wolf is a very mixed bag. On the one hand, it is perhaps the most complex light-gun game for the NES--compared to Hogan's Alley, Duck Hunt, a few others. On the other hand, I can't help but feel that it should have stayed in the arcade. The game is from your point of view, as you go through concentration camps, jungles, and other enemy-infested areas. There is no need to move your character, since the screen scrolls. All you control is your gunsight. In addition to the level variety, there are also multiple endings--pretty impressive for a shooting game back then. You can finish your mission successfully, get captured, or get killed. But there are some major downfalls to this game. First and foremost is the fact that this is a very bad light-gun game. Sure, you can use your light-gun, just remember that the NES light-gun didn't have Auto-fire. Your finger will be plain tired shortly after starting the level, meaning that you'll die shortly after, meaning you'll have to start all over again. If you use the NES controller to move your gunsight, it's a little sensitive at times, but at least you can squeeze off more rounds with less effort on the part of your thumbs. In the arcade version, the light-guns were semi-automatic, which made the game more realistic and easier to play. To wrap this review up, this game's only (but major) fault is in it's light-gun mode.

Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight Review

Street Fighter 2010: The Final FightThe Word Street Fighter has been identified as, by any gamer's standards, a Fighting Game. This installment of street fighter, however, is nothing of the sort. As a matter of fact, it's a platformer!
Street Fighter 2010 puts you in the role of a man named Ken (no, he is not the one from the series, oddly) who seeks the the killer of his friend (Who also happens to NOT be M. Bison). As you might have guessed from the title, it is supposed to take place in the future. The game features an upgradable weapon system and an insane difficulty. However,it just seems like Capcom slapped a popular name on an otherwise fairly run-of-the-mill platformer. So, if you are a fighting game fan through and through, don't feel too bad if you pass on this game. However, if you want to test your mettle at old-school platformers, you may want to pick this one up.

Ultraman Review

UltramanIn the vast array of pseudo-martial arts games, it's nice to see Ultraman in the mix. And until and unless you obtain a Japanese Playstation or mod chip equivalent (in order to play Ultraman: Fighting Evolution), this is about as good as it's going to get for Ultraman fans in the U.S.A.
The game is not actually based on the original Ultraman from circa 1968, but rather an Australian version of the series (hardcore Sentai/Kaiju fans know this superhero as Ultraman Great). But the principles are the same, a Godzilla-sized hero who uses karate chops and energy weapons to defeat Godzilla-like monsters.
I'd give the game 5 stars just because this soothes my severe affliction of Ultramania, except that the game betrays the TV show in some respects: A monster must be completely pummeled until it has effectively no life left before Ultraman can use his Specium Ray to kill it. (In the show, monsters were sometimes very much unhurt when they were fatally zapped by Ultraman's ray. Still others died without the ray's use.) A big drag here is that the lethal ray cannot be fired until it completely "charges," which takes way too long to be satisfying. (At least that explains why TV's Ultraman would use karate moves for a couple of minutes before finally applying lethal force.)
Related issues might tick off purists, like why can't Ultraman fly away during battle, or switch back temporarily to human form when his three minutes run out, since these were tactics used in the TV show. Just roll with the game rules, and you'll still have a good time.
Until you get a number of games under your belt, you'll find that Ultraman gets beaten into unconsciousness a lot more often than he did in the TV show. The monsters are all pretty close to the same strength after the first two (which are considerably easier), and the game becomes more of an endurance test thereafter, to see if you can hang onto enough lives to battle the final monster.
One more note: The rules change subtly as the game progresses, in some cases making Ultraman's jumping or running anywhere from more difficult to impossible. This is a pretty dull way to add difficulty; shouldn't tougher monsters with more interesting tactics be the new challenge?

Super Metroid Review

Super MetroidIt's sort of funny how I came to own Super Metroid.Back in 1995, I had some money and I was looking to buy some used Super Nintendo games at the local Movie Gallery.I found one that I wanted, but I had enough money to buy one or two more.I didn't really see any others that I was dying to have, but Super Metroid looked spectacular from the back of the box and I had always heard about how great it was, so I went ahead and bought it.Little did I know that it would turn out to be my favorite game of its kind, and possibly my favorite video game of all time!
When you first start a new game of Super Metroid, a short cinema that consists of 3D pictures and dialogue will start showing and telling the story.I could tell you the story, but that would spoil it.
Your job is to control Samus Aran, and guide her through several different and challenging worlds that mainly consist of futuristic-looking aliens as enemies. While you make your way through the game, you can always pause the game and look at the map to see where you need to go and where you're currently at.
Samus always has a gun that you can use, but there are several other weapons and gadgets that you can find somewhere in the game, and then use. There are missiles, super missiles, bombs, super bombs, other kinds of beams such as an ice beam, new suits such as a gravity suit for the underwater environments, the ability to run EXTREMELY fast, a grappling hook, X-ray vision goggles, extra energy units, and much more.
But it's not a piece of cake for Samus. All over the place, are several different enemies that can fly, eat Samus alive, jump from one side of a room to the other, and more. There are also AWESOME bosses that you have to defeat. These bosses can range from a towering dragon that throws claws at you, a bird that has wings that never get tired, to the all-powerful Mother Brain, and others.
Pretty much, Super Metroid is mainly about exploring the different environments.Samus starts out at scratch, with only one energy unit and a basic gun.You must find missiles, extra energy units, new suits, and all the other items, in order to be able to use them. The more items you find, the better off you'll be, and the better ending that you'll see at the end of the game.
There are also items other than weapons or powerups that need to be found in each world, such as save points (for saving your game), map data, and more.
Everything about Super Metroid couldn't have been any better. The graphics are haunting, well detailed, and couldn't have been any better for this type of game. The backgrounds have great effects such as lightning or morphing effects, and the characters in the game look very sci-fi and detailed.Just like the graphics do, the sound effects and music add to the science fiction and horror theme of Super Metroid.I'm one of the few lucky people in the world who is fortunate enough to own the Super Metroid soundtrack (it was only made in Japan and it's VERY hard to find), and let me tell you, it has the best music I have ever heard in a video game. All the tracks have that horror sound to them and they're all overly catchy.
As for sound effects, all of the sounds from the explosions, to the screeching and terrorizing voices of the enemies, are unbelievable.Super Metroid's control is slick, without being too touchy or sluggish; it's perfect in other words. Finally, Super Metroid has the best replay value of any adventure game I've ever played.I've went all the way through the game at least 50 times, and I'm still not tired of it!And I KNOW that I will NEVER get tired of playing Super Metroid. It's fun to see how many of the items you can find and how fast you can get through the game.
If there is anything bad about Super Metroid, it's the fact that it is only a one-player game.BUT, it is still one of the best games ever made.Super Metroid is as close to perfect as any game that has ever been made, in my opinion.
If you own a Super Nintendo, Super Metroid is a MUST-HAVE!It's not only one of the best games for the Super Nintendo, it's one of the best video games of all time, for any system.Electronic Gaming Monthly recently published a list of the 100 best video games of all time, and they chose Super Metroid as the best game of all time. That's right, they chose it as #1.When you play it, you will see why!Get it today while you can!

Life Force Review

Life ForceOnce you get past the first thirty seconds to first minute of this game, it is very hard, for the most part, there are seven levels of paths closing off if you don't go through them in time, waves of enemies, and you fly in a ship that will be taken out with one hit by anything, unless you get the appropriate power up of course, all in all, only get this if you like side scrolling shooter games, and have very good memory, hand-eye coordination, and extremly developed video game skills.

NES Ghosts 'N Goblins Review

NES Ghosts 'N GoblinsLet me say this, THIS GAME IS BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT GAMES ever made.I will also say that it is not one everyone will enjoy.I have incredible fun playing this game as well as its SNES version. Here is my review.

The story is that you are the valiant Sir Arthur, not sure if there is supposed to be a relation to King Arthur but my guess is no.Your girlfriend and you are on a picnic in the graveyard (as seen in the opening scene) dont ask why you picnic in the graveyard but you do.Then a big red monster with wings, Satan i guess, appears and kidnaps her.You must follow the beast through the land and save your girlfriend.

Let me say some of the negatives of the game. The biggest problem is that YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE GAME TWICE IN ORDER TO WIN.Yes that is true, you go through the game and when you get to the final boss you are sent back to the beginning to obtain an item you need to defeat Satan. There is no way to get the item on your first playthrough and the develpers thought this would be a wonderful idea, well since the game is so darn difficult it is not fun at all when it happens to you, especially when you think your almost done. Also you die in two hits and many areas have respawning monsters and difficult traps.Getting extra lives is rare and like I said before the game is incredibly hard!

Positives are that the gameplay is great.Your standard weapon is like a lance or sword that you throw, you get powerups to your weapon. Also the games level designs are rather fun and the levels are quite different for one another, at least for the NES days. The game's difficulty also is not the kind that comes from being frustrating, its a lot like how difficult Mario Brother games are, you will die and die constantly but you will continue playing as you pull your hair out.You also feel some accomplishment when you pass a level or boss.

Overall I feel this game is great for the hard core gamer or someone who enjoys a real challenge. Many casual gamers will be turned away by its difficulty but I feel it is a very fun game worth owning.

Super C Review

Super CThen you need to pick up Super C, because of all the Contra games, I still find this to be the hardest of the lot. However, Super C is a game where you can't wimp out.Much like the first Contra, it takes practice to learn. However, as far as advancing the series goes, Super C does it in the way a game ought to do it.It keeps the same basic gameplay, but it throws in new enemies, harder levels and different level designs.Simply put, mastering the first Contra doesn't give you an edge in Super C.

There are eight levels in the game, and it works exactly as the first Contra did in this respect. You will go through, running and gunning through tons of enemies. You'll find many weapons for you to use. They all come from the previous Contra game. You'll find a machine gun, flame thrower (there are two types this time), laser and the Spread Gun.Again, as any Contra veteran can tell you, the Spread Gun is perhaps the best weapon you could hope to get.Strong, and can hit just about anything.

What makes Super C much harder than the first Contra game is simply that there is more stuff that comes at you.More enemies, and more gun shots to avoid.Combine that with the fact that the Classic Konami code DOES NOT work with this game. One hit, you're dead, and you've only got two lives to start with. You earn more by scoring lots of points, but with bosses that are much more difficult in scope and enemies that take a lot more time to predict, Super C will have you dying of frustration (perhaps even literally).

Super C does two player co-op exactly as the first one did it.Again, there are few games that do two player co-op better thanthe Contra series.Super C is no exception.

The music, while not better than the first Contra, is still fantastic.Graphic wise it's also better than the first Contra. It uses the same sprites but the environments are far more detailed.Allowing for more populated levels.

Old school gaming almost doesn't get any better.

Product Description:
THIS IS THE NES NINTENDO VIDEO GAME VERSION. ALL-TIME CLASSIC The original arcade version of Super Contra played essentially the same as its forebearer. The main difference was in its versatility. While the original "Contra" had three versions of gameplay (side-scrolling, up-scrolling, and pseudo-first-person), Super Contra added a top-view perspective as well as improving the scrolling levels by including inclined surfaces. As a result of this and changes to the enemy forces, it was a more difficult game to master. A quirk that it shared with the original Contra was the usefulness of the "Spread" gun. This gun made advancing through the levels much easier. It was a common occurrence that players reset the game if they lost this weapon, even though they were at a high level in the game. To beat the game required much more skill and experience than in the original.

Metroid Review

MetroidMetroid(1986). The first Metroid game and only one to appear on the NES.

Imagine that it is the year 1986. Nintendo had finally managed to break through the market with Super Mario Brothers the previous year, and it looked to be an uphill climb in greatness for the system. The NES was becoming a household name, and Nintendo was sure to release many more classics which would define the system. Metroid was one of these.

Of all the spectacular 2D platform adventure games to be released throughout the last 20 years or so, such as the masterpieces Super Metroid, Castlevania Symphony Of The Night, Rygar, the GBA Castlevanias, Clash At Demonhead, and others, all of them owe their design to the popular original Metroid. While Super Mario Brothers technically invented the 2D action platform genre, and Zelda was a milestone for adventure gaming, up until Metroid there were no games that merged the two genres together. To put it simply, Metroid showed us a large sidescrolling environment with no "levels" so to speak, and combined it with items to collect and upgrade your character. For its day this was unheard of.

Now I will go through the Positives, the Negatives, and the other Negatives that I consider to be overblown about Metroid...

THE POSITIVES:

-WELL DESIGNED GAME LAYOUT. Each area that you traverse is filled with lots of pathways, secrets, enemies, and powerups for you to collect. One thing I'm very impressed with for the game back in its day is that it's designed to prevent you from accessing certain areas without the aid of another ability/weapon. It also leaves you to think of ways to bypass some of these obstacles before you have these abilities. Very clever, Nintendo.
-VERY DIVERSE ARRAY OF WEAPONS AND ABILITIES. For weapons, you've got the long beam, ice beam, and wave beam, which isn't a whole lot compared to other games, but enough to suit you for this adventure. Your abilities range from a hi jump, to a morph ball, to a protection suit, and to a damaging screw jump attack. Good enough for exploring the inner sanctums of Planet Zebes.
-GOOD RANGE OF ENEMIES. While they tend to repeat themselves in different areas of the game, they do come in a variety of types. Most of them are very challenging, some are enough to make you pull your hair out, and others can be avoided altogether.
-GREAT DIFFICULTY. This game is not an easy one, and its steep uphill learning curve will be loved and hated by many.

THE NEGATIVES

-THE ICEBEAM ACQUIRING LATER ON BECOMES FLAWED. What I mean is that every weapon you acquire replaces the one before it, and because of that, once you have your most powerful weapon, the wave beam, you'll be in trouble when you reach the final lair. You need the icebeam again when approaching the end of the game. Some may get frustrated with this aspect.
-YOU CAN'T DUCK AND SHOOT! It becomes really annoying early in the game when you don't have the bomb yet and you need to shoot those spikey creatures on the ground and you can't.
-THE BOSSES ARE TOO EASY. Well, Mother Brain is a bit tough because of all the stuff shooting at you, but Kraid and Ridley are both a bit disappointing because all you have to do is come close to both of them and just let loose with the missles.

Now I'll address the Negatives that people have about the game that I think are just hot air:

-THE GRAPHICS ARE OLD. People often say this about the game, but honestly, can you expect anything more from a game that came out in 1986? It works for the time. Though some of the environments can get a little bland in places, it's not that bad.
-NO SAVE GAME FEATURE. Again, keep in mind that the year is 1986, and the only game that would've already had this feature is Zelda, which may or may not have come out before this game. The passwords can be tedious, but they save everything.
-VERY LITTLE STORY. Once again, 1986. See a common theme here? If you think about it, the original Zelda really didn't have any bigger of a story to it either but nobody complained there. Same thing with Super Metroid. Plus, let's not forget how adding an in-depth story into the gameplay killed the freedom and pacing of Metroid Fusion.
-NO MAP FEATURE. While having a map would help, the game isn't really all that intricate compared to Super Metroid, so by not having the map, the challenge factor bumps up and makes the game FEEL larger.

Overall, Metroid is a flawed masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless. If you feel like divulging in a historical yet essential classic of the NES, then Metroid should fill the gap nicely. This game already comes as a bonus to both Metroid Prime and Zero Mission, so you might as well save money and play those. While Zero Mission may be a better rendition of the original game, no one can deny the classic sensibilities of this NES shooter. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Other recommendations:
-Any other sidescrolling Metroid title (Fusion, Super Metroid, Zero Mission, Metroid 2)
-Any NES Mega Man game
-Castlevania Symphony of the Night (PS1) and any of its GBA contemporaries (Circle, Harmony, Aria)
-Rygar (NES)
-Clash At Demonhead (NES)
