Dragon Warrior II Review

Dragon Warrior IIDragon Warrior 2 expanded on the original Dragon Warrior in several ways. The world map was four times larger, you could enlist the services of two additional warriors, the storyline was more complex, and the enemies could attack you in larger and more dangerous groups.

Having been released during the middle of the NES's lifespan, one should not expect to find dazzling graphics and masterful soundtracks here. However, the graphics are generally easy enough to understand and serve their purpose even though they are tile-based and generally bland, especially in the dungeons--most of which look exactly alike. The music score is decent, particularly the dungeon and castle music scores. The dungeon music can actually be a bit frightening, especially since the enemies themselves are so deadly.

Dragon Warrior 2 is quite challenging, as there are many places to explore. The game starts off quite linear at first, but once you rescue the Princess of Moonbrooke and get the ship, the game opens up considerably. There's also a reasonable variety of weapons, armor, and magic spells available to you to help you defeat the enemies.

However, this game has several flaws:

1.Difficulty.Even to this date, Dragon Warrior 2 is one of the hardest RPGs in existence. In this game, literally almost every battle has the potential to be your last one.The enemies will notoriously gang up on a weakened character. And the enemy groups are also often much stronger than you are. Some enemies can drain half of your MP in one attack.Other enemies are too strong to be located in some dungeons (such as Dragon Flies in the tower with the Water Crest). Also, the dungeons are very, very difficult. The Cave to Rhone is easily among the most dangerous dungeons in any RPG.There are invisible holes, snaking passages, obscured rooms, and corridors that repeat themselves, so you would be wise to make a detailed map of the more difficult areas.

2.Weak play control. The menu screen was simplified from its original version in Dragon Warrior 1, but it is still not so easy to navigate.Buying, selling, and trading items is also quite difficult because you have to remember who has what beforehand.Being able to view your item list more easily while you shop would have been nice. Also, the Return spell is a bit of a pain to use since it warps you back to the last place you saved, even though that might not be the village or castle you want to return to.

3.Not enough space.Even though you have three characters who can carry up to eight items a piece, you will often find yourself throwing items away or abandoning treasure chests because you simply don't have the room.In addition to the characters' regular weapons and armor, there are four keys that open four different types of doors. These keys cannot be thrown away, so they must sit in your inventory taking valuable space even if you don't use them. You also might want to equip a Dragon's Bane on every warrior to reduce the effectiveness of the enemies' spells. So that's another space gone. This lack of space further contributes to the game's difficulty because it means you have less room for restorative items.

Having said that, this game is reasonably fun to play. The level curve is rather steep, so this game should appeal to RPG veterans. The storyline is reasonably engaging and there's even a bit of humor in the dialogues you can have with the townspeople.Unfortunately, Dragon Warrior 2 has not aged well, as it was really just a good game for its time.A lot of DW2's weaknesses have been fixed in later RPGs, so the casual RPG player may wish to skip over this one. However, you can't really go wrong with playing this game, as it's actually a pretty good game.Just remember that it's a bit on the difficult side, so be prepared.

Dragon Warrior IV Review

Dragon Warrior IVAs the title implies this is Enix at it's very best.THe last Dragon Warrior game to appear on the NES and it goes out with a bang.Lets start with the length of the game, 5 chapters, five stories all eventually intertwined.A crew of 7 main characters, and at least 7 or more alternate/ incontrollable characters.Literally over 50 or more hours of gameplay guarentee, and an incredible story that rivals even the Great Final Fantasy of today.Obviously to a gamer who is just entering or was weened on the likes of Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 they might be disgusted by the repetitive level building, or need to actually search for a few things, or ancient graphics, but the masterful story will keep most in tuined.Infact if my memory serves me right ENIX is remaking this title for the PSX and plans to have it out before the sytem dies (They had an SNES remake but the system died before it was released). If this game does return to Amercian shores it will be worth purchasing no matter what.Own this, buy this, steal it, import it, it doesn't matter oen this title.YOu will not be disapointed.I still play it to this day (When my system works).

Willow Review

WillowThis is a fantastic game, based loosely on the Ron Howard/George Lucas movie of the same name. It is like Zelda I, but in my opinion better. Not only is it substantially longer, it really grabbed my attention from start to finish and I never got bored.
The only downside i can remember is that you do have to endure the old "defeat countless easy enemies in order to level up so you can progress successfully through the harder parts" routine - but that's more or less a given for these types of games, unfortunately.
Other than that one flaw, this game delivers hours upon hours of adventure fun! If you like good, long, CLASSIC RPG adventures, this game is definitely for you!

Operation Wolf Review

Operation WolfOperation Wolf is a very mixed bag. On the one hand, it is perhaps the most complex light-gun game for the NES--compared to Hogan's Alley, Duck Hunt, a few others. On the other hand, I can't help but feel that it should have stayed in the arcade. The game is from your point of view, as you go through concentration camps, jungles, and other enemy-infested areas. There is no need to move your character, since the screen scrolls. All you control is your gunsight. In addition to the level variety, there are also multiple endings--pretty impressive for a shooting game back then. You can finish your mission successfully, get captured, or get killed. But there are some major downfalls to this game. First and foremost is the fact that this is a very bad light-gun game. Sure, you can use your light-gun, just remember that the NES light-gun didn't have Auto-fire. Your finger will be plain tired shortly after starting the level, meaning that you'll die shortly after, meaning you'll have to start all over again. If you use the NES controller to move your gunsight, it's a little sensitive at times, but at least you can squeeze off more rounds with less effort on the part of your thumbs. In the arcade version, the light-guns were semi-automatic, which made the game more realistic and easier to play. To wrap this review up, this game's only (but major) fault is in it's light-gun mode.

Dragon Warrior III Review

Dragon Warrior IIIThis stands as one of the two best RPGs of NES. Interesting story line which plays out throughout the game, as you are a boy hearing tales of your father being killed in a fierce battle with a dragon atop of a volcano. Then one day ofcourse you gather three of your friends (each can be modified with abilities and several other things) to go find out the truth for yourself. Along the way there are several adventures battling monsters, kings, dragons, yourselves and other things across a massive land full of secrets, towns, castles and towers. Another nice feature is that the game takes you back to the original world of Dragon Warrior, so there is a whole other game in itself within the game. This game is also available on Gameboy Color.

Dragon Warrior (Nintendo NES) Review

Dragon WarriorDragon Warrior is a game of complete skill and strategy because the player has to figure out how to get to a town without dying and gaining experience at the same time. The object of the game is to defeat the dragonlord, no more to be said except that it is hard to get a high enough level to beat any minion of the dragonlord and himself.

The controls are the easiest to tell and learn, the controls are the following:
A button is the basic action it does everything, the player press A to bring up a menu of commands. In a fight it comes up automaticly.
B button cancels a command.
Start pauses the game.
Use the control pad to move the character.
Select does nothing.

This is a really fun game and I would recommend this game to people who still have a NES(Nintendo Entertianment System).
