NHL '94 Review

NHL '94I've had this game for a VERY long time, and although I have NHL games for my N64 and PSX, this is still very fun to play.
Even though there's no fighting in this game, the game's still good.I believe that this was the first year that EA Sports presented the one-timer option, which REALLY allows you to let the puck fly.
NHL '95 was pretty good, too, although for the SNES, they completely messed up with the goaltenders. Those who held the glove in their left hand held it in the right, and vice versa.
NHL '96 was just too easy to score, with NHL '97 being almost exactly the same.
Frankly, this game seemed to be a lot more fun than the other games for the SNES or Sega

The Super Nintendo Home Entertainment System (SNES) was Nintendo's second home console. Whereas the earlier system had struggled in the PAL region and large parts of Asia, the SNES proved to be a gobal success, allbeit one that could not match its predecessor's popularity in Southeast Asia and North America - due inpart to increased competition from Sega's Mega Drive console. Despite its relatively late start, the SNES became the best selling console of the 16-bite era. NO CASE, NO MANUAL.

Lethal Enforcers Review

Lethal EnforcersThe basic premise of Lethal Enforcers is that you are a police officer whose task is to eliminate terrorists by means of shooting to save the city. The controls work surprisingly well and are never a hassle. This game is a lot of fun of multiplayer or singe-player. It has a high replay value as well because of its wonderful arcade-style shooting. You shoot bad guys you get points or even new weapons, you shoot an innocent person and you lose a life. This game tests your reflexes and how well you pay attention to who you shoot. The graphics look great and the framerate is smooth. There is also the ability to shoot out windows which provides even more fun. This game is not without flaws though. When you play in multiplayer mode sometimes you can get confused as to whose reticle is whose or who is shooting what, and the game does dock points for missing enemies. If you love arcade shooters this game is definite must-have for you.

Classic NES Series: Super Mario Bros Review

Classic NES Series: Super Mario BrosIf you want to buy one of the RETRO Classic NES carts Nintendo is offering this is definitely #1 on the list for sheer ease of play and memories. SUPER MARIO BROS is a perfect port of the NES game (minus one glitch at the end of the 3rd world that gave you infinite lives).Several have bemoaned you can not save your progress, and that's true ... but in the original game this was not an option.Learn the game well enough and you can WARP your way through the beginning levels anyway! You play as Mario or Luigi jumping your way through many worlds (levels) to get to save Princess Toadstool and her courtiers.Set in a land where evil mushrooms, turtles, fish and birds attack from all directions (okay 90% of them are on the right!).
The graphics and controls are the same ... no embellishments or "lost zones" or challenge modes ... just straight up classic MARIO and LUIGI in their first adventure back in the NES days. It's a very nice port, and I like the ability to take it with me on the road in my SP.It also brings back memories when I hook it up to the TV and get to see it normal size!
I've kind of gone off about paying $20 for Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, and Excite Bike (why not a compilation of those on ONE cart - especially when you can get the e-reader versions for $5).But this one is well worth it because you have many levels to play, and the ability to play 2 player! This is still a fun game, and I can't believe how instantly likeable it still is even after playing all the latest!Cute, simple, and fun!Any age can enjoy it!Highly reccommended - not just for nostalgia freaks.Though they will get a kick out of the perfect replica packaging - from the instructions, the cart, and the box -- it all looks old school!Trademark classic 80s game that helped build an empire around Italian plumbers attacking mushrooms!Wow!

Classic NES Series: Bomberman Review

Classic NES Series: BombermanIn 1987 Bomberman was a nice fun and addictive game. The "Classic NES Series" version is fun too but it feels as if something is missing.
Bomberman has a very simple concept to grasp. You're placed in an arena with monsters and you must destroy these monsters with bombs. There are also walls and such blocking your path that you can bomb.Bomberman has 50 levels so it'll keep you busy but its the same thing throughout all 50 levels. The enemies begin to move faster and faster as the levels increase.
The original version had long passwords to right down.Thankfully this version lets you save your game when you get to another level (kind of like the original NES Metroid in Metroid Zero/Prime).You can just as easily push the L and R buttons at the same time.
The problem with porting a classic is you port the problems too.Bomberman is fun but being 50 levels long makes the game rather boring and tedius. Especially considering you're dropped in virtually the same arena.
The other problem is that since the original Bomberman never had multiplayer, neither does this.Multiplayer is what really made Bomberman fun.
This is a nice Classic NES Game but to be frank, the original version wasn't much so why would this port of the original be any different? There are still fifty levels and it still gets boring in the middle. But at least unlike other games with the same basic level it has an end.
Easily this is for anyone who is a fan of Bomberman, and I mean a die-hard fan.I'm not a die-hard fan of the first Bomberman.

Classic NES Series: Pac-Man Review

Classic NES Series: Pac-ManPACMAN is the game that basically defined the Arcade. But this isn't the "Classic Arcade Series" its the "Classic NES Series" which means we get the NES version. This is NOT a good thing and while PACMAN is one of the games that will NEVER be forgotten the "Classic NES Series" doesn't capture it in all its glory.PACMAN was a nice classic Arcade game. I wouldn't consider the NES version to be a classic in anyway. There are a few things that stand out as to why.
The gameplay isn't bad. You're PACMAN in a maze eating up little yellow pelts. The Big Pelts give you the chance to capture the ghost.
But as I said some things are just wrong. For example, the Arcade version was a stretched out screen with the score at the top. This version shows the score off to the far right and tries to hard to fit it into the screen. You'll notice that PACMAN, the fruit and the ghost are all bigger than the corridor of the maze.
PACMAN also suffers from what many other Classic NES games suffer from and this one has it bad.For one ITS BEEN RE-RELEASED SEVERAL TIMES!If you have the Namco Museum you're fine (and that's even out on the GBA).Don't buy the classic NES series of PACMAN. Instead buy the Namco Museum package. Not only is it better but its also the Arcade version.

Ice Climber: Classic NES Series Review

Ice Climber: Classic NES SeriesIce Climber is one of those NES games that wasn't really too popular and until Super Smash Brothers Melee, it was almost forgotten about. But now its been released as a part of Nintendo's Classic NES series.Though I have to wonder how it got here.Ice Climber is a classic based on its age but not so much its popularity. But it is still pretty fun to play even nearly 20 years later.
Ice Climber is a pretty simple game to grasp. You play as two eskimos who climb a mountain. The game has about 32 mountains to climb and you can link up with a friend and scale the mountain alongside him or her.You have to climb the mountain as the level scrolls killing enemies in your way with your hammers. It's a pretty easy concept to grasp just like the other NES classics.
Ice Climber is more worthwhile than other classics. The 32 mountains will keep you busy for a while but the game is really easy to complete just the same.
The Graphics and Sound are no where near the standards of today's GBA game and no gamer should expect them to be. That's what the "Classic NES Series" banner at the top is made to tell us.
The other problem is if you have an E-Reader you can easily buy Ice Climber on that and save yourself some money.Overall though, Ice Climber is a pretty fun game but it isn't as up to scale as the rest of the classic NES series.

Classic NES Series: Excitebike Review

Classic NES Series: ExcitebikeExcitebike is one hell of a good game and now it is revived on the Gameboy Advance. Those who loved the original and want it here unchanged can have that.
Excitebike once again has a nice and easy to get used to way of playing. You press the B and A buttons to accelerate. The B buonn pushes you along faster but you also have a bar at the bottom of your screen. Once it fills up you have to let your bike sit for a while until it cools down. Not to mention that you also race against three other drivers going over bumps and whatnot. The real task at hand isn't to beat the other three players but to beat the time.
Excitebike was the first racing game to have a track editor. Unfortunately on the NES you couldn't save that track. But on the GBA you actually can save it. My gripe is you can only save one track which bites.
There are a couple of other problems. If you have an E-Reader you can get Excitebike there. The other is simply that the GBA has had to have some of the graphics squashed down to fit the screen. This shouldn't pose any real problems though.
Excitebike is a grand game and one of the true classics in the Classie NES Series.Along with "Super Mario Bros." and of course "The Legend of Zelda" this is what you should get.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (Classic NES Series) Review

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link**WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS**

I just finished 'The Adventure of Link'.I just can't help but to be amazed by this timeless classic more and more I think about it. This 'amazement' does not come from the personal fact that it happened to be my favorite Nintendo game back in '80s, but comes from the way I was mesmerized and sucked into this old, outdated game, which happened to be 17 years old since it came out. Link doesn't have any flashy special attacks or special effect-filled magic like games these days, but does have something they don't; amazing gameplay.

Frankly I bought this game as a collection since I bought the first one for GBA(and yes, for nostalgia sake as well). However, I couldn't believe myself for keep coming back to this game again and again...and finished it in couple days.May be I happen to like old school/simple games,

BUT THIS SIMPLICITY WITH DEPTH SHINES AMONG COUNTLESS COMPLICATED YET SHALLOW GAMES OUT THERE, PERIOD.

From the moment I found out how to get into the house of old wizard through the chimney, and to the moment of finding out that you have to fight your self at the end, was one heck of adventure in the eyes of thirteen years old teenager 17 years ago AND thirty years old man 17 years after.

I just want to dedicate this review to those who created this incredible, incredible game, which made my confused part of teenager life more worthwhile and memorable.

Thank you =)

Dr. Mario Review

Dr. MarioIncredibly simple -- and simply addictive. It's practically impossible to put this game down once you start playing it. There are vague similarities to Tetris, but Dr. Mario is even simpler in concept. So you can jump in immediately -- but this doesn't mean the game isn't challenging. You'll quickly discover just how difficult a simple game can get! Fortunately, the three game play speeds and 21 levels of play allow you to set the difficulty level at whatever is most challenging for you.

A serious beef with the GBA version: the screen is poorly lit, and as a result the red and yellow viruses and capsules can be hard to distinguish from each other. I'm hoping that, since GBA games can also be played on the DS, the better lighting of the DS might solve this problem.

And a minor quibble: why not save the high scores?! (They are erased every time you turn off the system.) This was also true in the 8-bit NES version, but there's just no excuse for not having the saving capability now. It'd be nice not to have to write down my high scores!

Classic NES Series: Donkey Kong Review

Classic NES Series: Donkey KongOkay ... okay... I get it now. This version of DONKEY KONG is NOT THE ARCADE version - it's a port of the NES version for that home system back in the day.So that is why the elusive 4th level seen in the arcades is not here.DONKEY KONG is a great game even at 3 levels, but consider that a previous GAME BOY edition had the cement/pie factory and 96 ADDITIONAL LEVELS AS WELL!
I'm still holding on to my $5 e-reader version as well as my e-reader versions of DONKEY KONG JR and DONKEY KONG 3!Why couldn't all 3 of these games been put into this cart?RETRO gaming is wonderful, but not when you feel cheated somehow.I suggest the true NES classics like SUPER MARIO BROS or LEGEND OF ZELDA!There's more bang for your buck!

Before Mario became super he was a brave carpenter (or so says one early promotional flyer) instead of a plumber and had an 800-pound gorilla on his back. You can shake off that monkey all over again in the re-release of Donkey Kong as part of the NES Classics series. The game looks great on both the Game Boy Advance and the Game Boy Player for the Nintendo GameCube. As the story goes this freak-of- nature gorilla kidnaps the beautiful girl. Mario being the chivalrous type runs to the rescue. Game Boy Advance SP Classic NES Limited Edition Review

Game Boy Advance SP Classic NES Limited EditionBeing a child of the mid to late 80s, a Nintendo was my life for much of my youth.Fond memories of Mario and Zelda and Tetris abound. As the Nintendo (what everyone calls an NES these days, but back then it was just a "Nintendo," then the SNES was the "Super Nintendo") was a beautiful piece of work, so is this GBA SP.
I had been putting off getting an SP.I'd bought a GBA when it came out, and by golly it was good enough for me until the DS.But a chance meeting with a preview article of the Classic Series melted any reservations I had about re-buying a Gameboy.
As I write this, the beautiful, sensual GBA is sitting on my desk.I will not lie about my fervent Nintendo fangirlism, so the rest of this review will probably sound kinda weird to any of you new-generation Sony worshippers.
The sleek lines of this handheld blow me away every time I look at it.Surely it is superior to every previous iteration of the SP.The slightly shiny silver outside - complete with a row of lines representing the top of the NES console.A classic red and black Nintendo oval logo complete the top half. The bottom as you may expect remains true to its roots as well. But the real prize is inside the flip-top screen.
Open up this GBA SP and prepare to remember why Nintendo is your god.The original Nintendo controller represented in new, squareish glory. The D-pad and buttons are a bit different, sure, but everything else makes me want to dig up my old controllers and stare at them, then switch to the SP, then switch again. It's really beautiful.
The SP, even with the new improved backlight, does kinda sit a bit uncomfortably in your hands compared with the first GBA.Plus the headphones thing (where you need a special adapter, etc).BUT!For anyone who has even ever ~looked at an NES, this GBA SP will make you want one.It has a tantalizing, hypnotic song that it will sing to you.
So, if you're debating whether or not you really need a GBA SP, the answer is now a resounding YES!

The Magic of Scheherazade Review

The Magic of ScheherazadeKnowing the immense popularity of Zelda, you'd think at least a few people would have discovered The Magic of Scheherazade by now. Granted, it's a hard-to-spell title from an obscure company that only made six games for the NES (five of which sucked), but that just makes this a rare treasure from an unexpected source.

This game has a lot going for it. There's the action RPG element of Zelda (walk around an overworld stabbing/shooting guys; bosses; linear quest structure) along with the ingredients of a traditional RPG (HP/MP, leveling, magic, turn-based battles). It's the only game I know of from the 2D era that blended the two genres, and succeeded in making both modes of play fun. It's accessible yet has depth, is challenging yet fair, and the pacing feels just right (plus there's a save feature). As in all RPGs, random encounters are a fact of life, but in this game they're not an annoying pain in the ass (unlike in, say, Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior) partly because they only happen when you cross between rooms and partly because they don't happen every 20 seconds.

On top of nailing the gameplay, Scheherazade also has a colorful cast of characters (your allies), a charming sense of humor, and a good amount of creativity in the graphics, text, and level design. Best of all, it's a music lover's delight. Seriously, load this game up and tell me if you've ever witnessed a title screen with a more awesomely harmonious opening piece. Having such a mesmerizing digital symphony by your side for 10 straight hours (5 if you've done it before) makes the adventure that much more of a pleasure.

The plot is typical save-the-princess cheese, but who cares? All you need to know is that next to Super Mario 1 and 3, Zelda, 1943, and Double Dragon II, The Magic of Scheherazade kicks more ass than any game on the NES.

Classic NES Series: Castlevania Review

Classic NES Series: CastlevaniaI remember playing this game years upon years ago and still cant believe i beat it while i was about 8 years old. Yikes!

This classic, which spawned tons of great Castlevania games which are still going strong, is intensely difficult and had me on the verge of throwing my Gameboy at the wall more than once.

The first level of this game is extremely easy and gets you into the feel of the game. However, levels 2-5 are extremely hard. From the first time you fight the flying medusa heads or jumping igors you will loathe them and probably have nightmares of them knocking you into pits.

Later in the game you are only allowed 4 hits total before you meet your maker while some of the bosses, like the grim reaper, need about 20 hits to take em down. Not to mention just about every 'jump' you have to make in this game is surrounded by annoying enemies ready to knock you into a sudden death plummet.

Still, this game does bring back fond memories of the fun yet frustrating game. Now we just need them to bring back Castlevania 2 and 3 for the Gameboy...
